One bottle [750 mL] Martinelli 2014 Zinfandel, Vellutini Ranch, Russian River Valley

Giuseppe Martinelli and Luisa Vellutini eloped from their small village in the Tuscany, Italy, at the ages of 19 and 16. Giuseppe had been a winemaker in Italy, so they made their way to California in search of land to farm and start a winery. After two years of working land for another local farmer, they saved enough money to purchase land of their own, thus the birth of Martinelli Winery in 1980. The Martinelli family continues their rich history over 135 years later, continuing the tradition of farming their own vineyards, and producing critically renowned wines. Giuseppe’s great granddaughter Regina Martinelli is currently at the helm of the winery and was previously a past featured vintner of L’Amour du Vin!

This 2014 Vellutini Ranch Zinfandel is rated 94 by Robert Parker and 92 by Wine Spectator. Deep raspberry flavors take over the palate with layered flavors of white chocolate, cinnamon, and spicy mocha. Drink it over the next 10-12 years.

Previously named “Summit Ranch” for its mountainous surroundings, Pride Mountain Vineyards is a 235-acre estate located in the Mayacamas Mountains at an elevation of 2,100 feet in St. Helena. The prime elevation delivers the vines the sunshine and warmth they need to mature during the day, while allowing them to rest in the cooler evenings. One bottle [750mL] Caymus 2012 40th Anniversary Cabernet Sauvignon, Napa Valley

Caymus Vineyards was founded in 1971 when Charlie and Lorna Belle Wagner asked their son, Chuck, who had just graduated from high school, if he would be interested in starting a family winery. When he accepted the offer, thus was born Caymus Vineyards. Since releasing their first vintage of Cabernet Sauvignon in 1972, the Wagners have dedicated their efforts to produce only the highest quality Cabernet Sauvignon. Two bottles [750mL] Vineyard 7 & 8 2014 Estate Chardonnay, Spring Mountain District, Napa Valley

Vineyard 7 & 8 is always a favorite among LDV patrons who remember vintner Wes Steffens, twice a L’Amour du Vin featured vintner. His parents founded in 1999, who planted their roots and their grapes on top of breathtaking Spring Mountain in the 1980’s after years of searching for the perfect vineyard. Named after Wes’s mother and winery co-founder Launny Steffens’ financial background and interest in numerology, the “seven” in the name is considered a lucky number in western culture, while “eight” stands for prosperity and happiness in eastern culture. Vineyard 7 & 8 is the perfect culmination of the Steffens family’s devotion and dedication to the pursuit of fine Chardonnays and Cabernet Sauvignons.

This 2014 Estate Chardonnay is no exception to the long line of critically-acclaimed wines produced by the Steffens family. Rated 90 by Robert Parker, this wine features crisp white currant, tangerine notes, and caramelized citrus. Like the 2013 vintage, it spent 14 months in 25% new French Oak, adding a note of oak on the palate. Fresh and medium-bodied, drink over the next 4-5 years.

One magnum [1.5L] Williams Selyem 2017 Pinot Noir, Terra de Promissio Vineyard, Sonoma Coast; PLUS, tour and tasting for 4

What started as an experiment in home winemaking for Burt Williams and Ed Selyem, turned into something bigger than either of them could have imagined. Now a cult-status winery with international acclaim, Williams Selyem’s ambition is to “make the best wines, from the best grapes, from the best growers.”

The vineyard Terra de Promissio, which translates from Latin to “Land of Promise,” is an ideal terroir for Pinot Noir grapes with rich soil, southwest sun exposure, elevation, and fog of the Petaluma Gap that allows the grapes to have an extended hang time – allowing optimum ripeness.

This outstanding 2017 Terra de Promissio Pinot Noir earned ratings of 98 by Wine Enthusiast and 93+ by both Wine Advocate and Wine Spectator. Refreshing and light-bodied, floral, cinnamon, and berry aromas balance the raspberry, strawberry, and blood orange palate. Grainy tannins complement the crisp acidity of the wine, with a long and focused finish. Drink now through 2028. Included in this lot is a tour and tasting for four at the Williams Selyem Estate in Healdsburg, California, which is typically only available for winery current members. The certificate also includes immediate membership on the Williams Selyem list with an allocation of the next release.

Three bottles [750mL] Cakebread 2017 Pinot Noir, Anderson Valley; one each: Two Creeks Vineyard, Annahala, and Apple Barn

Founded in 1973, Cakebread Cellars was casually purchased by Jack and Dolores Cakebread when they were photographing the area. As they started to live their dream, the winery began producing quality wines that pair with good food and good company. Annahala and Apple Barn estate vineyards are former apple orchards that sit on the banks of Anderson Creek, not far from the Pacific Ocean. Slight differences in climate—Annahala is closer to the coast and spends more time in fog, while Apple Barn receives longer stretches of sunlight—yield superb Pinot Noir grapes of distinct personality from each site.

The 2017 growing season in Anderson Valley, California (in western Mendocino County) provided ideal conditions for Pinot Noir grapes to mature uniformly, resulting in tremendous flavor, concentration and bright, yet balanced, acidity. All three wines included in this lot are a reflection of that – the 2017 vintage of Apple Barn Vineyard, offers fresh boysenberry and raspberry aromas with floral hints of violet and an appealing mineral thread. On the palate, bright notes of raspberry and strawberry give way to a deep black cherry mineral finish. This is a dense, full-bodied Pinot Noir, with elegant tannins and signature complexity from diverse clones and rootstocks; 100% sourced from Apple Barn Vineyard.

A lighter-style Pinot Noir, the 2017 Annahala Vineyard offers fragrant ripe black cherry and raspberry aromas, coupled with a smoky mineral tone, usher in bright raspberry, strawberry and cherry flavors accented by sweet spices and balanced by fine tannins and well-integrated oak. The wine’s long finish is graced by vibrant cherry and berry tones, a touch of zesty spice and a vein of refreshing minerality; 100% sourced from Annahala Vineyard.

Rated 91 by Wine Advocate, Two Creeks Vineyard Pinot Noir is a perfect combination of both vineyards offering an attractive raspberry-crimson color leads to sweet black cherry, raspberry, dried rose petal and violet blossom aromas. Fresh raspberry and bright strawberry flavors are concentrated, yet balanced, in this pretty, floral wine. The finish is smooth, with silky tannins, mineral notes and lingering fresh fruit – 100% Pinot Noir – a blend of 77% Annahala and 23% Apple Barn Vineyards.

Enjoy these wines with rack of lamb, prime rib sandwiches, or portabello mushrooms on the grill. Each will evolve beautifully over the next 3-5 years in cellar or can be enjoyed now!

One bottle [750mL] Williams Selyem 2007 “Westside Road Neighbors” Pinot Noir, Russian River Valley

This 2007 vintage scored 93 points from Stephen Tanzer and Wine Enthusiast. A blend of several vineyards located near the winery, in the valley’s famed Middle Reach, this is the biggest and richest of Williams Selyem’s Spring 2007 releases. Full-bodied and soft, it shows ripe flavors of cherries, pomegranates, plums, sweet rhubarb, cola and sandalwood. Medium red, but rich in color, the wine presents a bouquet of ripe strawberries, berry cobbler, plums, anise, clove, butterscotch and toasty oak. The palate is layered with flavors of blackberry, cassis, cherry cola, sarsaparilla, toasted bread, minerals and concentrated ripe tannins. This multifarious and seductive wine shows the true vineyard expressions of this unique area.

One magnum [1.5L] Fair Niente 2017 Estate Chardonnay, Napa Valley

Established in 1885 by John Benson, Far Niente Winery originally functioned as a gravity flow winery, built against a hillside in Oakville. It thrived until Prohibition in 1919, when the winery was left abandoned. It was not until 1979 when Far Niente was resurfaced by Gil Nickel. During the three-year restoration process, the name Far Niente was found carved in stone in the front of the building, where it still remains today. Nickel chose to preserve the Far Niente name because of its Italian translation, meaning “without a care”. He hoped to recapture the bygone era of life when people lived without a care. Rated 91 by Wine Spectator, the 2017 Estate Bottled Chardonnay is elegant and refined with notes of ripe citrus and green apple, finished with accents of sage and spice. Drink now through 2023.

Three bottles [750mL] Spottswoode 2015 Sauvignon Blanc

It was three years ago that Beth Novak Milliken, Spottwoode Estate Winery President and CEO, was here at L’Amour du Vin sharing amazing wines with us! Spottswoode is one of the most acclaimed Cabernet Sauvignon wineries in Napa Valley, a two-time featured vintner at L’Amour du Vin (2013 and 2017), and a favorite among LDV patrons. Spottswoode wines are especially known for their refined elegance, balance, and classic structure. The winery’s Sauvignon Blancs are typically serious and expressive with structure and sophistication, meant to stand among the greatest Sauvignon Blancs in the world, and the 2015 vintage is no less. Its grapes were sourced from primarily from Sonoma Mountain and Knights Valley with just a touch from the Spottswoode estate vineyards Hyde and Ink Grade in Napa. Features green-apple, pear, and peach palate with notes of grapefruit, passion fruit, and dried herb. Full body with tenacious acidity and a creamy finish – rated 93 by Wine Enthusiast and 92 by James Suckling who calls this “one of the best sauvignons of Napa!” Ready to enjoy now!

One magnum [1.5L] Drinkward Peschon 2014 “Entre Deux Mères” Cabernet Sauvignon, Napa Valley, with wooden box

The result of a joint venture between Lisa Drinkward and Françoise Peschon, Drinkward Peschon is the culmination of great winemaking. While Lisa lends her background in operations at her own family’s winery Behrens, winemaker Françoise, formerly of famous Napa Valley winery Araujo and currently also winemaker at Accendo Cellars (the Araujo family’s newest project), lends her experience in great wine making. Selected as 2019 Winemaker of the Year by San Francisco Chronicle, it’s no surprise why Françoise is a force to be reckoned with when it comes to fine wines.

“Entre Deux Mères” literally translates from the French to “Between Two Mothers,” representing the friendship that began between two mothers as a result of their children and grew because of a mutual love of wine. Their philosophy for winemaking is similar to their philosophy for raising children: love, nurture, and let them express themselves and become their own unique individuals. Their minimalist intervention in winemaking allows their wines to express their own uniqueness, leading to an elegant and balanced palate.

Their 2014 Drinkward Cabernet Sauvignon is rated 95 by Robert Parker. A blend of 97% Cabernet Sauvignon and 3% Petite Verdot, this vintage is deep purple with crushed berries, crème de cassis, and chocolate cherries. Its full body and grainy tannins make it refreshing with a very long finish. Drink now through 2036.

One magnum [1.5L] Favia 2016 Rompecabezas Red Wine, Amador County; PLUS, tour and tasting for four at the historic winery in Napa

Annie Favia and Andy Erickson began Favia Wines in 2003. Their shared passion for wine began long before they released their first vintage of Favia, with Annie having worked in the cellars of John Kongsgaard and Cathy Corison, and as a viticulturist under David Abreu. Andy, meanwhile, spent his time as a winemaker across Napa, namely in the cellars of Screaming Eagle, Ovid, and Dalla Valle.

Spanish for jig-saw puzzle, Favia’s Rompecabezas is inspired by the wines of the Southern Rhone, but of course is decidedly Californian in nature. The 2016 vintage earned ratings of 93 from both Wine Advocate and Wine Spectator. This blend is 51% Grenache, 33% Mourvèdre, and 16% Syrah. Bottled without fining or filtration, the wine retains the subtle nuances that give it such an attractive character: dried rose petals, cardamom, fresh raspberry, and graphite. The fine-grained tannic structure of the wine helps to deliver these subtle yet intense flavors that continue to flow long after the finish. It is both focused and expansive, and more complex with each sip. Certainly a pleasantly complex puzzle of flavors and textures.

Also included in this lot is a tour and tasting for four at Favia’s historic Napa winery. Mutually agreed upon time and date. Valid for two years; expires 3/7/2022.

One magnum [1.5L] Charles Krug 2015 Family Reserve Generations Red Blend, Napa Valley

Generations is a Bordeaux-style blend created to honor the Mondavi family’s past, present and future. The fruit is night-picked from the estate vineyard in Yountville and aged in new French oak barrels. This 2015 Reserve Red Blend is rated 92 by James Suckling: juicy and layered with bold berries and chewy tannins, this deep garnet wine is full-bodied with a berry and toast crème brûlée finish – 91% Cabernet Sauvignon, 5% Merlot, 4% Petit Verdot. Three bottles [750mL] Epoch Estate Wines, Pasa Robles; one each: 2018 White, 2014 Veracity, and 2014 Ingenuity

Epoch owners Bill and Liz Armstrong began their journey as vintners simply for the love for good wine, which turned into using their Geology degrees and preference for Rhône varietals to set out and find the perfect plot of land for their dream winery.

In 2004, they came across a small pocket of land off California’s Gold Coast where the rich soils, weather, hilliness, and temperature swings posed the ideal location for their first vineyard, Paderewski Vineyard. Following closely behind were the purchases of Catapult Vineyard in 2008 and York Mountain in 2010. Now perched on the top of York Mountain in Paso Robles, Epoch Estate Wines produces wines that are carefully crafted from Rhône, Zinfandel, and Tempranillo varietals. Winemaker Jordan Fiorentini, one of the region’s most talented female wine artists (per the November 19 issue of Indulge Magazine) aims to incorporate each of the unique terroirs into the wines, allowing the land and the grapes to speak for themselves. Accolades for winemaker Fiorentini also include inclusion in Wine Spectator’s “Grit & Grace of Paso Robles” article in the June 2019 issue.

Included in this lot are three critic favorites – rated 93 by Wine Advocate, Epoch 2018 White is a vibrant blend of Grenache Blanc and Viognier with a hint of Roussanne sourced 58% Catapult, 35% Paderewski, and 7% York Mountain Vineyards. It has floral aromas with orange blossom and poached pear; light to medium-bodied with a long finish.

The 2014 “Veracity” is a deep garnet purple with a raspberry and kirsch nose balanced by hints of bacon and Indian spices. Raspberry, licorice, and black pepper accents take front stage on the palate. Full bodied with grainy tannins, it finishes with earthy acidity. Winemaker Fiorentini calls it lush and vibrant – 63% Paderewski and 37% Catapult Vineyards. Rated 94 – Wine Advocate, 92 – Wine Enthusiast, and 90 – Wine Spectator.

Like “Veracity,” the 2014 “Ingenuity” is full-bodied and a deep purple/red in color –  50% Syrah, 25% Grenache, 18% Mourvèdre, 7% Petite. Rated 94 – Wine Advocate and 95 – Wine Spectator, this wine is sourced 64% Catapult and 36% Paderewski Vineyards, and features black fruit and spice layers with aromas of licorice, chocolate cherries, and violet. Finishes long and firm with ripe, round tannins. An excellent representation of what the lesser-known, distinct-tasting, Paso Robles, California winemaking region has to offer and critics agree – bid!

One jeroboam [3L] Schug Carneros Estate Winery 2013 Pinot Noir with wooden box

Schug Carneros Estate Winery was the first L’Amour du Vin featured winery at the inaugural event in 2004 – 16 years ago! Walter Schug built his reputation as one of California’s most celebrated winemakers during his tenure as Founding Winemaker for Joseph Phelps Vineyards in the 1970s. After years of hard work, he finally built his own winery with his wife Gertrud in the Carneros Appellation. Here he could focus on the Pinot Noir and Chardonnay varietals that had always been close to his heart. Founded in 1980, Schug Carneros Estate Winery carries on their family’s tradition of hand-crafted Pinot Noir and continues to make wines known for their balance and grace.

This classic Carneros region Pinot Noir offers a wide range of flavors and aromas, in the tradition of the finest red Burgundies of France. “Clonal diversity” is achieved by carefully blending several vineyard lots, each retaining its own unique clonal signature in the blend. The 2013 Carneros Estate Pinot Noir has notes of floral, strawberry and orange peel on the nose; medium-bodied with a lean palate of lovely fruit and tobacco flavors. The finish is long and savory. Rated 92 by James Suckling. Pairs nicely with lamb, duck, even grilled fish, and will improve with additional cellar but if decanted can also be enjoyed now!

One magnum [1.5L] Hirsch Vineyards 2017 Reserve Estate Pinot Noir plus, private tasting for 6

Hirsch Vineyards is a pioneer of Pinot Noir plants along the Sonoma Coast. In fact, it is the oldest premium Pinot Noir vineyard on the true Sonoma Coast. It was founded in 1980 by David Hirsch, who up until 2002, sold his grapes to other wineries. He became highly sought after for the quality of his Pinot Noir and Chardonnay grapes. David finally made the decision to start creating his own wines after 22 years of solely focusing on planting and farming vines. Ironically, building the vineyard helped him better understand the land, which allowed him to better farm it and create higher quality wines. The extreme terrain of the vineyards creates wines with high acidity and elegant balance.

This magnum of their 2017 Reserve Estate Pinot Noir was rated 93+ by Wine Advocate and 95 by James Suckling. The nose reveals fresh strawberry, wild blackberry, and violet. The palate is juicy and medium-bodied with lots of fruits and elegant tannins. Pale to medium ruby in color, it features a long and layered finish. Drink now through 2030.

One jeroboam [3L] Ridge Vineyards 2017 Zinfandel, Lytton Springs, Dry Creek Valley, Sonoma

The featured winery of L’Amour du Vin 2019, Ridge Vineyards’ extensive history began in 1885 when Italian doctor Osea Perrone purchased180 acres of land near Monte Bello Ridge. Using native limestone, he constructed what became Monte Bello Winery and produced his first vintage of wine under its name in 1882. From there, the winery flourished and grew. As more partners joined Monte Bello Winery (including Lytton Springs) and the vineyards began to expand across the ridge, the name changed to “Ridge Vineyards.” The winery produces primarily Zinfandel and Cabernet, while Syrah, Grenache, Carignane, and Petite Sirah constitute a small percentage for the purposes of blending.

Sourced by the winery since 1972, Lytton Springs vineyard was added to the Ridge Estate in 1991 because of its excellent location, climate, and soils that consistently produced classic, balanced Zinfandel wines. The winery on-site is surrounded by 115-year-old vines, one of the most unique sites in all of Sonoma’s wine country.

Since 1991, Ridge has made zinfandel from the old Pagani Vineyard on the east-facing side of Sonoma Valley. All the vines were planted 90 to 120 years ago. Pagani Ranch is a fine example of what Ridge looks for in a vineyard: low-yielding old vines, carefully tended by a quality-conscious family who, in this case, have worked the land for four generations. The vineyard’s long survival is proof of its merit. An average site would have been abandoned during the thirteen years of Prohibition, or during the Depression.

The 2015 Ridge Pagani Ranch is saturated red/purple; appealing mixed black and red fruits, compote, exotic barrel spice. Ripe black cherry and plum fruits on entry, opulent and full-bodied, lively acid, and a sensuously long finish. Rated 94 by Jeb Dunnuck, 93 by Wine Spectator, and 94 by Antonio Galloni.

One bottle [750mL] Castello Di Ama 2010 San Lorenzo Chianti Classico Gran Selezione

The Chianti Classico Castello di Ama San Lorenzo takes its name from the magnificent wide valley that their 18th century villas overlook. This is Castello di Ama’s Gran Selezione, made from grapes that come from their older vineyards and from others that, having been planted at least 10 years ago, have attained a perfect level of polyphenolic maturity at harvest. This 2010 vintage of Grand Selezione is an extraordinarily elegant, powerful, and intense wine. Undoubtedly, it represents the perfect picture of the uniqueness of the territory.

Rated #6 in the Wine Spectator Top 100 of 2014, they called this wine “powerful and elegant,” with notes of strawberry, cherry, and rose. Wine Enthusiast rated it 95 points saying its “graceful palate offers layers of succulent wild cherry, white pepper, licorice, mint and eucalyptus alongside firm, polished tannins and fresh acidity.” Drink now through 2030.

Two magnums [1.5L] Failla Sonoma Coast Pinot Noir 2014 Occidental Ridge and 2015 Peay Vineyard

Failla Owner and Winemaker Ehren Jordan’s viticultural training in France greatly influenced his farming and winemaking choices to produce Syrah, Chardonnay, and Pinot Noir that capture the essence of California’s coolest regions. He is a true vigneron, with decades of combined experience in the cellars and vineyards of the Rhone Valley, Paso Robles, Sonoma County, Napa Valley and beyond. His obsessive hands-on farming practices and his minimalist hands-off winemaking style come through in every bottle, allowing site, variety and vintage to shine through, evident in the two wines included with this lot.

Peay Vineyard always produces a wine of intensity and muscle upon release, this vintage is no exception. The 2015 Pinot Noir has deep floral and wild fruit aromatics, California brush, rose hips, cherry pit, all followed by muscular tannins. Only 234 cases produced.

Occidental Ridge Vineyard produces brooding, intense, elegant and deeply textural wines. The 2014 Pinot Noir has prominent floral aromatics, savory undertones, turned earth, deep wild cherry tones. One double magnum [3L] Emmitt-Scorsone 2016 Domenica Amato Chardonnay, Bacigalupi Vineyard, Russian River Valley

Emmitt-Scorsone Wines is a partnership between winemakers Palmer Emmitt and Michael Scorsone. At the small artisan winery off the beaten path near Healdsburg, passion for making great wines is the motivating force. Wines are bottled under two labels – Judge Palmer and Domenica Amato – each expressing different interests of Palmer and Michael within the world of wine and honoring members of their respective families.

Domenica Amato produces distinctive wines inspired by the grape growing regions on the coasts and islands of the Mediterranean Sea. Sourced from small, family-owned vineyards, and hand-made with passion and authenticity using old-world methods, these wines are available in extremely limited quantities. The Chardonnay included in this lot is sourced from Bacigalupi Vineyard. Pioneers in the region, the Bacigalupi family played a key role in putting the California wine industry on the map, selling Chardonnay to Chateau Montelena for the wine that triumphed over top-flight white Burgundy at the 1976 Judgment of Paris tasting. The site benefits from cool air and fog channeled in from the Pacific, as well as the famously unique Goldridge loam soil – eroded volcanic material combined with sandstone and alluvial deposits.

The vineyard shines in this 2016 vintage presenting a focused, fresh and fleshy expression of stone, mineral, lemon zest and peel make up this wine. Light bodied and fresh in the glass, it has a bite of power and tannin on the finish; rated 90 by Wine Enthusiast.

Three bottles [750mL] Pulido~Walker 2017 Cabernet Sauvignon, Panek Vineyard, in a custom birchwood box; plus VIP tour and tasting for 4

Proprietors Mark Pulido and Donna Walker have a long history in Napa Valley, building relationships and putting down roots in the community. Both grew up in pharmacy families and their scientific backgrounds make Mark and Donna precise, inquisitive, and detailed – they know that perseverance and attentive observation yield results worth waiting for. Hence, this amazing 100% Cabernet Sauvignon sourced singularly from Panek Vineyard in St. Helena, Napa Valley.

2017 in Napa Valley brought intensive winter rains and widespread flooding ending Northern California’s drought but also two heat spikes in June with temperatures soaring as high at 120 degrees. But, the most dramatic events of 2017 began overnight on October 8, quickly raging into a complex of wildfires that burned down thousands of acres and hundreds of homes, including the Pulido~Walker Estate residence. Although devastating, these fires had no impact on the 2017 vintage except bearing the vintage of a significant, historic year.

Another winner from Pulido~Walker and award-winning Winemaker Thomas Rivers Brown, this 2017 Panek Vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon is balanced and light, with fresh red fruits and aromas of berries and violets. Rated 95+ by Jeb Dunnuck who notes its medium to full-bodied richness, ripe tannins, and impressive balance. This savory, meaty Cabernet is going to benefit from 4-5 years of bottling and drink beautifully for 15-20 years.

Included with this lot is a VIP tour and tasting for four guests at the remarkable new estate in Napa Valley, which is available by reservation only (not open to the public). Mutually agreeable date; expires 3/7/2021.

Two magnums [1.5L] Caymus Vineyards 2015 Special Selection Cabernet Sauvignon, Napa Valley; and 2017 Caymus-Suisun Grand Durif, Suisun Valley

Caymus is consistently one of California’s best Cabs. You will not find a vintner with more enthusiasm and passion than owner/winemaker Charlie “Chuck” Wagner. He and his wife Lorna purchased land near the family farm in 1941 where they planted fruit orchards and wine grapes. It wasn’t long before Chuck pulled out the entire orchard to plant Pinot Noir and a clone of Cabernet Sauvignon acquired from Stags Leap grower Nathan Fay. Caymus introduced their first “Special Selection” Cabernet in 1975 and it continues to be the flagship wine of the Wagner family to this day. It is comprised of the very best barrels of the vintage and not produced every year. The wine has collected many accolades, including being the only wine to twice be selected “Wine of the Year” by Wine Spectator (in 1989 and 1994).

The 2015 vintage earned high marks from Wine Spectator – 95 points: almost unbridled plum sauce, blackberry preserves and melted licorice flavors, but keeps a smoldering edge for form while picking up alluring black tea and incense notes on the broad finish. There’s a long echo of chocolate adding to this hedonist’s delight. Ready to enjoy now or cellar through 2032.

Caymus-Suisun Grand Durif is a Petite Sirah sourced from Suisun Valley on the north coast of California. The 2017 vintage is lush and rich with a full body mouth feel and concentrated palate. While not yet rated, previous vintages have earned 90+ ratings from critics.

These Cabernets can be opened immediately or allowed to breath for thirty minutes to an hour to further enhance aromas and flavors, before enjoying with a delicious grilled steak on a warm night. Three French Reds, six bottles [750mL]; two each:

  • 1996 Domaine René Leclerc Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru Combes aux Moines, Burgundy
  • 1999 Clos de l’Oratoire Grand Cru Classé, Saint-Emilion, Bordeaux
  • 2000 La Gaffelière, St-Emilion, Bordeaux

Gevrey-Chambertin produces some of the world’s most prestigious red wines and is often called the “King of Burgundy” – a fitting description, as its wines have unquestionable concentration and strength while maintaining their regal Pinot character. Gevery-Chambertin tends to lean toward darker fruits and power, with tannins that are more sophisticated than wines of other villages in eastern France. Domaine Leclerc, producer of the 1996 included in this lot, is a historic 20acre vineyard that produce great examples of an authentic representation of Gevery-Chambertin.

Produced in southwestern France, Clos de l’Oratoire is located on Saint-Emilion’s northeast slope. Wines tend to be round, smooth and very seductive. The 1999 Clos de l’Oratoire Grand Cru Classé has aromas of dark cherry, raspberry, plum along with tobacco and mineral. Finishes up soft and silky – 95% Merlot 5% Cabernet Franc.

The stand out of these beauties is the 2000 La Gaffelière, St-Emilion, rated 90 by Wine Spectator, 91 by Wine Advocate, and 94 by Wine Enthusiasts: opulence and richness, with all the generosity of Merlot, are the hallmarks of this superb wine. It is huge and powerful and has enormous potential. What is so exceptional about this wine is that all its power is still to be revealed. In 10 years’ time, it will prove to be one of the stars of the vintage in Saint-Emilion.

Planted on 127 hectares between the Greve and Pesa river valleys, the vines enjoy hot temperatures during the day, and cooler evenings throughout the growing season. Each of these bottles has been scored by numerous reviewers in the mid to high 90’s. Each can be drunk now, and held for another 10 to 20 years.

One double magnum [3L] VGS 2017 Chardonnay, Napa Valley, in etched bottle; PLUS, a private Epicurean Garden Lunch for 4 guests

Winery founder Jean Noelle Fourmeaux was originally sent to Napa Valley in the 1980’s to “spy” for the French government. When he fell in love with the beauty of the landscape, he sent a telegram home that simply said “looks good, I stay.” With now over 35 years of experience, Jean’s vision for VGS (very good shit) is to produce wines of distinct style and character, representative of their birthplace. Led by his own “laissez-faire” approach to life, VGS Chateau Potelle is guided by a passion for making wines, and has built a reputation for its commitment to high quality and one-of-a-kind taste.

The 2017 Chardonnay NOT your typically buttery, heavy chardonnay! The wine is very focused with lively acidity, initial aromas of lemon and grapefruit develop into a bouquet of apricots, almond paste, and honey; mandarins, lychee, and melon encompass the palate with a complex array of spices including ginger, anise, and citrus oils. In the mouth the wine stays lean despite a certain lusciousness that will develop with time. Ready to drink now or hold 2030.

Included with this beautifully-etched, large format bottle, is a private Epicurean garden lunch for 4 guests at the VGS Tasting House & Garden in St. Helena. Guests will enjoy a five-course lunch prepared by Michelin-starred La Toque Restaurant paired with the wines of VGS Chateau Potelle. Reservations must be made at least 21 days in advance to secure a mutually agreeable date. Lunch available Monday – Friday.

Six bottles [750mL] Darioush 2014 Napa Valley Reds, two each: Shiraz, Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon

Darioush Khaledi was instilled at an early age with the winemaking craft of his father, inspired by wine culture in the literary city of Shiraz – in modern day Iran – and the ancient city of Persepolis. He became a lifelong collector, seeking out old world wines infused with tradition and energized by modern technique. Today the Darioush estate comprises 120 acres in Southern Napa Valley spanning the Mount Veeder and Oak Knoll AVA’s. They believe truly unique wines reflect great vineyards, but also the character of the people behind them.

This amazing trio from a L’Amour du Vin past featured winery is a perspective of the winery’s amazing 2014 vintage. The Shiraz was rated 92 by Wine Advocate and 90 by Wine Spectator – balances torque with refinement, offering black currant, licorice and smoky beef notes, with big but polished tannins. The Merlot, rated 92 by Wine Spectator, displays the classic cocoa, coffee bean, black cherry and chocolate notes, lush, medium-bodied, flavors, an easygoing style, and light tannin.

And, the third of three superlative vintages in this decade, the 2014 Cabernet Sauvignon exhibits remarkable balance and freshness lent by the long, temperate growing season overall, and furthered by our cool, marine-influenced Southern Napa vineyard sites. Impressive on entry, the wine is brimming with dark fruits— black cherry, savory blueberry and cola are wrapped in an earthy ribbon of bittersweet cocoa, espresso and hints of vanilla. The palate is gorgeously textured and lively, revealing sweet herbal notes of anise, dried sage and tobacco. Skillful blending of Bordeaux varieties imparts this Cabernet Sauvignon with a measure of restraint, intended to reward long term aging. Robert Parker awarded this wine an excellent 98.

Twelve-bottle [750mL] horizontal of Bergström 2011 Pinot Noir, three each: Le Pré Du Col Vineyard, Temperance Hill Vineyard, Bergström Vineyard, and De Lancelloti Vineyard

John and Karen Bergström first started Bergström wines with the idea that it would become a legacy for their children and a tribute to John’s Swedish upbringing. It was with these dreams in mind that the couple uprooted their lives in Portland and moved to Dundee, Oregon, where they planted a 13-acre vineyard on a south facing slope overlooking Willamette Valley. Now run by their son Josh and his wife Caroline, Bergström produced highly-rated Pinot Noirs and consists of five estate vineyards totaling 84 acres across the Willamette Valley’s best appellations: Bergström Vineyard, Silice Vineyard, Winery Block, Gregory Ranch and Le Pré du Col.

Experience four of those vineyards in this amazing 2011 vintage horizontal of Bergström Pinot Noir. Le Pré  Du Col is complex and tarte with flavors of rhubarb and pomegranate. Scents of licorice and tamarind lead the nose, while tightly wound tannins float over the palate; rated 93 – Wine Advocate. Temperance Hill, rated 92 – Wine Advocate and 90 – Wine Spectator, has wild cherry and tangerine aromas that harmonize with tarte fruits and citrus oils. Bright and citric, the finish is neat and smooth. The namesake Bergström Vineyard Pinot Noir is uncharacteristically dark berried, but juicy and tannic. Dense and piquant, this wine is rated 93 – Wine Advocate and 91 – Wine Spectator. Last but not least, De Lancelloti is light and defined with orange peel, blueberry, and green olive flavors. Rated 91 by Wine Spectator, this wine is no longer being produced so bid while you can!
