One bottle [750mL] Drinkward Peschon 2014 Entre Deux Merès Cabernet Sauvignon

Although Entre Deux Merés translates from French to “Between two Mothers,” this is not your momma’s Cabernet! Full-bodied, concentrated and with a solid frame of ripe, this 2014 Drinkward Cabernet Sauvignon has a refreshing line lifting the densely packed fruit with a long finish. Blended of 97% Cabernet Sauvignon and 3% Petit Verdot, it is deep garnet-purple in color and hits the dance floor with crushed blueberries, crème de cassis and chocolate-covered cherries notes followed by suggestions of yeast extract, smoked meats and fragrant soil plus a touch of camphor – rated 95 by Wine Advocate. This wine is creation of a dynamic duo of friends (and mothers) Lisa Drinkward, who lends her background in operations at her own family’s winery Behrens, and winemaker Françoise Peschon, formerly of Araujo Estate Wines and currently also winemaker at Accendo Cellars. Their joint venture Drinkward Peschon has very limited production sourced from the north coast of Napa Valley – this particular vintage is sold out so don’t let it slip through your fingers and add this gem to your collection!

One bottle [750mL] Hirsch 2016 Raschen Ridge Estate Pinot Noir, Sonoma Coast

Founded in 1980 by David Hirsch, Hirsch Vineyards is a pioneer of Pinot Noir plants along the Sonoma Coast. In fact, it is the oldest premium Pinot Noir vineyard on the true Sonoma Coast. Up until 2002, David sold his grapes to other wineries, becoming highly sought after for the quality of his Pinot Noir and Chardonnay grapes. After 22 years of solely focusing on planting and farming vines, David finally made the decision to start creating his own wines. Ironically, building the vineyard helped him better understand the land, which allowed him to better farm it and create higher quality wines. The extreme terrain of the vineyards creates wines with high acidity and elegant balance. Their 2016 Raschen Ridge Estate Pinot Noir is no exception with long tannins that encourage and harmonize the complex flavors. Sourced from the highest vineyards on Raschen Ridge, this wine boasts a classic, savory flavor with aromas of delicate spices, ripe cherry, and herbal accents.

Two bottles [750mL] Trefethen Family Vineyards, one each: 2017 Chardonnay and 2016 Cabernet Sauvignon

Founded in 1968, this family run vineyard has thrived since it’s beginning. Coming out of the prohibition, no winery had success until the Trefethens came along. In 1979, their 1976 Chardonnay was given the award of “Best Chardonnay” in the world, and since they have held themselves to the highest of standards when it comes to winemaking. This 600-acre winery has maintained it’s original building, built in 1886, and still uses it to age wine, as well as for tastings. Home to a 13,000 square foot barrel cellar and a sustainable approach to farming, the wines that come out of the Trefethen family vineyards are award-winning. Although the 2017 vintage is not yet rated, its Chardonnay is consistently ranked as a top 10 wine to try and the vintage prior earned 94 points from Wine Enthusiast. This 2017 vintage has notes of lemon, honeysuckle, and pear; round-bodied wine, aromas of vanilla and citrus come out of the bottle. The 2016 Cabernet Sauvignon is also a prerelease that has not yet made it to the palates of critics, however, past vintages have received high marks. This bottle is described as rich and concentrated with red fruits, spices, and vanilla. Yum!

Two bottles [750mL] Pride Mountain Vineyards 2013 Syrah, Sonoma County

Previously named “Summit Ranch” for its mountainous surroundings, Pride Mountain Vineyards is a 235-acre estate located in the Mayacamas Mountains at an elevation of 2,100 feet in St. Helena. The prime elevation delivers the vines the sunshine and warmth they need to mature during the day, while allowing them to rest in the cooler evenings. Their vineyards spread across 83-acres of land in six different soil variations, giving their vines the proper vitamins and minerals to grow ripe, flavorful grapes. A two-time L’Amour du Vin featured winery, this sold-out Pride Mountain 2013 Syrah is a must have. It features a full body with a deep purple color and dense tannins that meld into the creamy, rich texture of the palate. Aromas of boysenberry, blackberry, black tea, and white pepper supplement flavors of plum, blackberry, and faint pepper notes, granting this wine a rating of 91 from Wine Spectator and 90 from Robert Parker.

Three bottles [750mL] Turley. one each: 2013 Paso Robles, Presenti Vineyards; 2013 Paso Robles, Ubermuth Vinyeard; 2014 Contra Costa, Country Durate

Now an established vintner in Paso Robles, Larry Turley was born in Tennessee and raised in Georgia. Later he moved to California where he soon became an emergency room physician by day and a vintner/farmer by night. It is said that Larry never met an old vine he did not like. He now makes 28 wines from 35 separate vineyards with vines that date back to the late 1800’s. His best wines are probably his Zinfandels and his Petit Syrahs.

This lot include three outstanding Zins. From the 2013 vintage come the Presenti Vineyard and the Uberruth Vineyard Zainfandels. The former is sourced from vines planted in 1885 and the later in 1920. And old and a new Zin you could say. Parker rated the Uberruth a 95 and Antonio Galloni gave it 94. It should be ready to drink in a year or two will last another two decades. The Presenti was awarded a 94 by Parker, 93 by Galloni and a 93 by Wine Spectator. Ready now but will last another ten years. And form the 2014 vintage, the Contra Costa county Duarte contains some of the softest and silkiest tannins you will find in a Zinfandel. All the pundits awarded scores higher than 90 and agree that this has at least another ten years. These wines were purchase from the winery on a visit to Paso Robles and are probably not readily available in this market place. So if you are a Zin fan, this is you lot!

One bottle [750mL] CIRQ. 2011 Treehouse Pinot Noir, Russian River Valley

Created by Michael Browne of Costa Browne Wines, CIRQ’s winery is located in the Russian River Valley of California. The Treehouse Vineyard sits at an elevation of 750 feet, barely eight miles away from the Pacific Ocean, and surrounded by coastal cypress trees. Because of its remarkable location, the vineyard’s grapes receive more hours of sunshine, while also enjoying the cooling effects of the fog. Rich, volcanic and red soils help retain heat, letting the grapes mature evenly and creating wines with intense, balanced flavors. The 2011 Treehouse Pinot Noir is the first vintage of its kind. Sweet perfumes of cranberry, raspberry, and hints of spices mingle with a pomegranate, rhubarb, raspberry, and dark cherry palate. A velvet mouthfeel expands into a lingering hold on the mid palate. Rated 90 by Wine spectator, this sold-out wine can be enjoyed now through 2021.

Four bottles [750mL] Clarendon Hills 2001 Old Vines Grenache, Australia; one Blewitt Springs Vineyard and three Kangarilla Vineyard

Clarendon Hills is a small family run winery based in Clarendon, South Australia. Barrel samples from their 2001 vintage forshadowed this wine look to be one of the greatest Grenaches this extraordinary winery has yet produced. There are about 800-1,000 cases this single-vineyard Grenache, which is made very traditionally in open-top fermenters with punching down. To reiterate, it goes in the bottle after indigenous yeast fermentations. This wine spends 18 months in primarily old oak prior to being bottled without fining or filtration. It is among the finest Grenache-based wine made outside of France’s Southern Rhone Valley. The Blewitt Springs Vineyard Grenache is supple and generous, a lithe mouthful of subtlety spicy cherry, blackberry, sweet leather and spice character that lasts and lasts on the ultra-polished finish. Rated 93 by Wine Spectator – ready to be enjoyed now. The 2001 Grenache Kangarilla Vineyard is powerful, rich, and full-bodied with plenty of black cherry, licorice, and herb characteristics. Rated 91 by Robert Parker. Both of these wines are at the end of their cellaring days and are ready to be enjoyed now.

One magnum [1.5L] Favia 2015 Rompecabezas Red Wine, PLUS tour and tasting for 4

Just east of the city of Napa, the foothills of the Vaca Mountains gather to form a west-facing horseshoe – and embraced at its center is Coombsville. A young appellation (though commonly referenced by name as early as 1914), Coombsville is often described by its topographical resemblance to a “cup and saucer.” The ancient geological events by which we can account for this unique display are still enwrapped in speculation, however there is evidence of an abrupt and volatile past: volcanic eruption and collapse, uplifts and landslides, and the massive deposit of debris. These events established a niche within the Napa Valley, a quiet harbor for unique climatic and geologic character – and, resultantly, an equally compelling terroir. The historic Carbone property, now 6.5 acres along Coombsville Road, has become a home and estate for the Favia-Erickson family. The Favia team adheres strongly to these tenets: a reverence for craft, a celebration of time and place, a commitment to self-reliance. This is not as an exercise or performance, but a time-proven ideology and a way of life. The hope is to create a legacy that carries on these principles.

Their Rompecabezas Red Wine is a jigsaw puzzle of a wine, inspired by the sunshine, soil, and flora of the south of France. Grenache, Syrah, and Mourvédre combine to form a whimsical wine that will please many palates. Vibrant and expressive, with floral black cherry, cured meat and licorice notes that take on polish and depth toward refined tannins. Rated 92 by Wine Spectator and 94 by Wine Advocate. Included in this lot is a private tasting for four at the historic winery in Coombsville AVA in Napa Valley, where you can get first a first-hand look (and taste!) inside the holistic approach Favia takes not only with their wine, but the 6.5-acre farm and vineyard as well.

One magnum [1.5L] Caymus 2014 Special Selection Cabernet Sauvignon

In 1971 Charles F. (Charlie) Wagner and his wife Lorna Belle Glos Wagner asked their son Charles J. (Chuck) Wagner, who had just graduated from high school, if he would be interested in joining them in starting up a winery. If Chuck declined the offer, Charlie and Lorna were planning to sell out of their ranch in Napa Valley and move to Australia. Chuck accepted his parents’ offer to launch the winery, and thus began Caymus Vineyards. The Wagners produced their first vintage in 1972, consisting of 240 cases of Cabernet Sauvignon. Since then, Caymus has focused their efforts in the production of quality Cabernet Sauvignon. Caymus Vineyards remains 100% family-owned by the Wagners. Charlie, Lorna Belle, and Chuck worked together as a remarkable team for over 30 years building Caymus Cabernet. Today, Chuck, his two sons, Charlie and Joe, and one daughter, Jenny, have joined the family team. Farming grapes remain the priority with the family farming about 350 acres of choice Napa Valley land.

This 2014 Special Selection Cabernet Sauvignon is a rich, dense ruby color. This red hints at the dark fruit nose of blackberry and currant that carries through to the palate, interwoven with complex aromas of black licorice, anise and creme de cassis. On the palate, the wine opens up to reveal an earthiness, with brown spice, cigar box and ripe dark fruits that linger throughout the extracted and long finish. The texture is opulent and rich, yet has a velvety quality with supple density. Rich, fine-grained tannins are balanced with ripe fruit, acidity and oak. Rated 90 by Wine Enthusiast. Enjoy until 2024!

One magnum [1.5L] Williams Selyem 2016 Pinot Noir, Lewis MacGregor Estate Vineyard

In the 1970’s Burt Williams was given a few tons of free grapes by a local grower, from that he discovered his love and flair for winemaking.  Williams and his partner Ed set off to make their own Pinot Noir. They began by making only wines for themselves, never imagining that their in-home winemaking would turn into an internationally acclaimed winery. Williams Selyem has set a new standard for American-made Pinot Noir. The 2016 Pinot Noir, rated 93 by Wine Enthusiast, is made from vibrant fruit and purple flowers of the Lewis MacGregor Estate Vineyard. The black raspberry notes mix with mulberry, while tangerine adds liveliness to the nose and completes the aromatic fireworks. The sheer density of this wine is attractive today but will require several more years to achieve its full potential, with an optimal drinking window of 2021-2031.

One magnum [1.5L] Rochioli 2017 Estate Pinot Noir

The Rochioli wine family history began in 1911 when they came to America from a small village just outside of Lucca, Italy. After settling in Northern California and working as a ranch foreman, the Rochioli family acquired land of their own and spent their time tending to the land and experimenting with different grapes and wine blends. In 1968, the family decided to plant Pinot Noir vine clones from France. A third-generation winemaker, Tom Rochioli focuses on a traditional approach to winemaking. For this reason, Rochioli Estate Pinot Noirs have consistently earned excellent ratings, with their 2013-2016 vintages all earning a 90 and above from Wine Advocate. Their 2017 Estate Pinot Noir, aged 15 months in French oak, is a full-bodied blend of their single vineyard sites in the Russian River Valley. Beautifully balanced with silky tannins, the aromas of sweet cherry, vanilla, and subtle herbs add to the traces of dusty cherry on the palate and the long, silky-textured finish.

One double magnum [3L] Schug Carneros 2008 Pinot Noir, with wooden display box

Schug Carneros Estate Winery was the first L’Amour du Vin featured winery at the inaugural event in 2004 – 16 years ago! Founded in 1980, Schug Carneros Estate Winery is the showcase and life-long dream of one of California’s most celebrated winemakers. Walter Schug’s reputation blossomed during his tenure as Founding Winemaker for Joseph Phelps Vineyards in the 1970s, where he made California’s first proprietary Bordeaux-Style blend (Insignia) and legendary vineyard designated Cabernets (Backus and Eisele Vineyards). Walter set up his own winery with his wife Gertrud in the cool, marine climate of the Carneros Appellation. Here he could focus on the Pinot Noir and Chardonnay varietals that had always been close to his heart. The winery has become a family operation including Walter’s son Alex Schug, now managing partner.

Included with this lot is a double mangum of Schug 2008 Pinot Noir, a bright ruby color with aromas of cherry skin, dried cranberries smoky undertones. The palate shows more cherry and dried fruit flavors with earthy notes. Clean with a nice solid backbone completed by a racy acidity. Lots of cranberry flavors hint of strawberry. Balanced, tight, lean fruit, an ideal accompaniment to grilled fish and fowl or barbecued meats.

Two bottles [750mL] Kosta Browne 2012 Pinot Noir, Sonoma Coast

The result of a shared dream between two friends, Dan Kosta and Michael Browne, to grow Pinot Noir, Kosta Browne’s success is owed to the hard work and dedication of two men who originally had no idea what they were doing. In 1997, Dan and Michael were both working at a popular restaurant in Santa Rosa when they decided they wanted to start making Pinot Noir. After saving up tips they made at the restaurant to buy their first plants and equipment, they made their first barrel of wine and poured it for VIP customers at the restaurant, testing the waters for future success. After eight years of uphill battles, small wins, and unbelievable commitment, their dream of producing pinot noir was finally realized. Now having created wine for almost twenty years, Kosta Browne has produced vintage after vintage of successful wines – being the only Pinot Noir to be awarded “Wine of the Year.” Their 2012 Sonoma Coast Pinot Noir earned itself a rating of 92 from Wine Spectator and a 93 from Wine Advocate. One magnum [1.5L] Darioush 2014 Cabernet Sauvignon (signed)

Darioush Khaledi was instilled at an early age with the winemaking craft of his father, inspired by wine culture in the literary city of Shiraz – in modern day Iran – and the ancient city of Persepolis. He became a lifelong collector, seeking out old world wines infused with tradition and energized by modern technique. Today the Darioush estate comprises 120 acres in Southern Napa Valley spanning the Mount Veeder and Oak Knoll AVA’s. They believe truly unique wines reflect great vineyards, but also the character of the people behind them. The third of three superlative vintages in this decade, the 2014 Cabernet Sauvignon exhibits remarkable balance and freshness lent by the long, temperate growing season overall, and furthered by our cool, marine-influenced Southern Napa vineyard sites. Impressive on entry, the wine is brimming with dark fruits— black cherry, savory blueberry and cola are wrapped in an earthy ribbon of bittersweet cocoa, espresso and hints of vanilla. The palate is gorgeously textured and lively, revealing sweet herbal notes of anise, dried sage and tobacco. Skillful blending of Bordeaux varieties imparts this Cabernet Sauvignon with a measure of restraint, intended to reward long term aging. Robert Parker awarded this wine an excellent 98.  This signed edition is one you will want to take home tonight!

By 2002 their Cabernet Sauvignon had already come in first in a blind tasting of 12 Rising Star Cabernets at a U.S. Vintners Club tasting. From there, they moved on to be number one in France’s 12 best Cabernet’s from California. Since then, Rocca Family Vineyards has continued to refine their craft and produce outstanding vintages. This is a beautiful blend, with loads of blueberry and blackberry fruit, an opaque purple color, a hint of acacia flowers and subtle background wood. It’s broad, savory and expansive. This is a beauty to drink over the next decade, and typifies the boisterous, hedonistic style of the Behrens wines. Rated 93 by Robert Parker; drink now until 2026.

Three bottles [750mL] Owen Roe Winery, one each: 2010-2012 Red Willow Vineyard Red Blend, Yakima Valley, Washington – in wooden box

Made famous by “Sharecropper,” Owen Roe was established in 1999 to feature the interesting wines emanating from the terriors of the Yakima Valley in Washington and the Willamette Valley in Oregon. The “Sharecropper’s” wines were born out of the 2001 recession, when winemaker David O’Reilly and Washington farmers had to work out a partnership that harkened back to the days of sharecropping, where profits were distributed once the wines were made and sold. While that series still exists under its own label, Owen Roe is now producing a nice portfolio of wines in a more traditional method and relationship with growers. The three bottles in this lot are of the delicious Red Willow Vineyard in Yakima Valley. The 2010 bottle bears nuances of herbal flavors balanced by notes of both black cherry and coffee that turn into smooth tannins. The 2011 bottle is characterized by its herbal elements as well, but offers and appealing creaminess to the tart tastes of pomegranate. Finally, the 2012 bottle brings both cherry and dark chocolate flavors framed by lightly chalky tannins; rated 90 by Jeb Dunnuck of Wine Advocate. Overall, these blends are a product of premiere fruit and wine making excellence that will leave you nothing short of amazed.

One magnum [1.5L] Staglin Family 2013 Salus Cabernet Sauvignon

Perfectly located on the rich, volcanic soil at the base of Mount St. John, Staglin Family Vineyard is 100% solar powered with certified organic farming practices that result in better fruit and more complex wines. Four bottles [750mL] Martinelli Pinot Noir, two each: 2009 Bondi Home Ranch “Water Trough Vineyard”, Green Valley of Russian River Valley and 2010 “Sea Ridge Meadow” Three Sisters Vineyard, Sonoma Coast

Previous L’Amour du Vin attendees may recognize Martinelli Winery as the 2010 Featured Vintner. Expansion over the years has added many vineyards to the winery’s portfolio – these two are amongst the best examples of one from each the Russian River Valley and Sonoma Coast.  The 2009 Bondi Home Ranch has aromas of leather with earthy, herbal flavors along with notes of cola-berry and red cherry; received a 92 rating from Wine Spectator. Two magnums [1.5L] Pride Mountain Vineyards 2015, one each: Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot

Atop Spring Mountain lies Summit Ranch – a place rich with winemaking history and the longtime home of the family run Pride Mountain Vineyards. The ranch straddles the Napa and Sonoma county lines along the crest of the Mayacamas Mountains at 2100 feet. The altitude provides the vineyard with hours of sunshine and cooler temperatures. This, in combination with the rich volcanic soil, permits the grapes to ripen steadily throughout the growing season and allows winemaker Sally Johnson the time to perfect the character and distinctive quality of grape that is reflective in their accolades time and again. This 2015 vintage of the Cabernet Sauvignon as described by James Laube of Wine Advocate: plump and spicy, offering alluring flavors of dark berry jam, with floral and light cedar notes. He gave it a superb rating of 93. The 2015 Merlot has hints of lavender, green olive and graphite while remaining bright and velvety to the plate. Both wines are aged on the estate in caves dug on the property twenty years ago. To drink either of these wines is to be successfully transported to this romantic California hilltop almost immediately, an unforgettable experience that Johnson and the Pride Family have been working toward all along.

Located in the Willow Creek District of Paso Robles, California, Saxum Vineyards concentrates on producing phenomenal Grenache, Syrah, and Mataro wine blends. They use a hands-off, terroir-driven winemaking approach, allowing their wines to maintain the earthy undertone their grapes provide. The Smith Family’s estate vineyard, The James Berry Vineyard, sits at an elevation of 1200 feet just 10 miles from the Pacific Ocean. Rich soils promote the growth of healthy, ripe grapes, in turn creating rich, palatial wines. Saxum’s 2013 Rocket Block Grenache is exquisite, with a rating of 98 from Robert Parker’s Wine Advocate tasted it on two separate occasions, just before and then after bottling, the 2013 Rocket Block James Berry Vineyard comes from an east-facing, cooler parcel in the James Berry Vineyard that’s harvested very late. It is an extraordinary wine (100% destemmed Grenache) that was fermented and aged in concrete for a year before being moved to used barrels. Only bottled in 2003 and 2005 previously, the 2013 sports a medium ruby, mostly opaque purple color to go with ethereal notes of black raspberries, kirsch, currants, ground herbs, flowers and incense. It leans towards the elegant and finesse-driven side of the spectrum, yet it has insane levels of purity, fine tannin, no hard edges and a sensational finish. Wine Spectator rated it 95. Four magnums [1.5L] Au Bon Climat 2015, one each; “Knox Alexander” Pinot Noir; “Isabelle” Pinot Noir; Hildegard, Estate Bottled White Blend; “Nuits Blanches Au Bouge” Chardonnay

It takes a “Mind Behind” to create the world of Au Bon Climat, and a team to carry out the vision. The ABC team is a dedicated bunch that truly does believe life is too short to drink bad wine (who would dare to disagree!?). With Jim Clendenen at the helm, there is a balanced approach to life that is evident in the wines and in an upbeat workplace. Au Bon Climat sources fruit from several of the most highly regarded vineyards in the Central Coast. The winery has cultivated an international reputation for its Pinot Noir, Chardonnay, Pinot Blanc and Pinot Gris. Jim Clendenen, the “Mind Behind” Au Bon Climat, is recognized worldwide for his classically styled wines. In addition to his Burgundian-focused Au Bon Climat wines, Jim also established another brand, Clendenen Family Vineyards. The 2015 Knox Alexander Pinot Noir is very light in the glass. This elegant bottling by Jim Clendenen shows spicy aromas of mace, crushed sage and eucalyptus, set against tangy cranberry and hibiscus aromas. It’s a sprightly wine on the palate, with thyme, bay leaf and rusty cranberry flavors; rated 93 by Wine Enthusiast. The 2015 Isabelle Pinot Noir is a blend from multiple vineyards and shows that site specific cuvées are not always the best. This wine is a beauty with a complex, layered style in its mulberry, cherry, spice box, flowers, and forest floor notes. Just gorgeous on the palate, with perfect balance, no hard edges, and a seamless texture, it has fine, integrated tannins and a great finish, and an excellent rating of 93 from Wine Enthusiast. It’s reminiscent of a top Volnay and will keep for 10-15 years. Next up, the Hildegard Estate White is a blend of Pinot Gris, Pinot Blanc and Aligoté that emulates the pre-phylloxera plantings on Corton-Charlemagne—reveals notes of buttered apples, preserved citrus, toasted macadamia nut, struck match and a framing of toasty new oak. On the palate, the wine is full-bodied, textural and bright, with nice depth and a racy finish – 92 rating from Robert Parker. As previsions renditions demonstrate, this singular cuvée evolves very attractively in bottle. Considering this wine was matured in 100% new François Frères barrels, it’s already remarkably integrated. Last but not least, the complex and warm Nuits Blanches Au Bouge Chardonnay. With rich aromas of sandalwood, cinnamon, brioche French toast, vanilla and nutmeg, the smells make for a lush and attention-grabbing entry to this bottling. There is great cohesion of those spices on the plate alongside a bright lemony streak that cuts through the white peach and Marcona almond flavors. Wine Enthusiast rated the bottle an excellent 95 points. You do not want to miss out on this fine selection!

One magnum [1.5L] Gallica 2013 Cabernet Sauvignon, Oakville

Gallica Wine strives to practice lightly touching the land from the tending of their vines, thoughtful winemaking methods, to the simplicity of their packaging, Winemaker Rosemary Cakebread’s vision for a wine of her own, eventually called GALLICA, grew slowly. Inspired by earlier work at prestigious properties in both Napa Valley and Bordeaux, wines were made and a brand grew. The philosophy is a simple one: to craft elegant single vineyard wines which accurately depict the site and the story of each unique vintage. The brand symbol is a tribute to the ancient rose, their aromatics, and enhancement to winemaking.

Gallica’s beautiful 2013 Cabernet Sauvignon has velvety tannins, loads of plum, blackberry and cassis fruit and a floral component. It has a medium to full-bodied personality that would suggest a suave complex wine from a Bordeaux or Margaux appellation. The wine, receiving a 95 from Robert Parker, is quite beautiful with purity, richness and an overall charm that make this an endearing effort in 2013. Moreover, it should drink well for another 20+ years.

A trio of Cabs from Washington State, one bottle [750mL] each: 2012 Quilceda Creek, 2007 Corliss., 2008 Columbia Crest Reserve.

Three stellar Cabernet Sauvignons from Washington State that will compare to California’s best!

Quilceda Creek set the benchmark for Washington Cabernet Sauvignon in 2012, an ideal vintage that produced wines of power and elegance. The wine was named #2 of the top 10 wines released that year and rated 96 by Wine Spectator. Winemaker Paul Golitzin blended fruit from four vineyards to attain the distinctive flavors, polished texture and vibrant balance that are the hallmarks of this wine. The bulk of the grapes came from Horse Heaven Hills, including the Golitzin family’s Palengat Vineyard and neighboring Champoux Vineyard. The Klipsun Vineyard on Red Mountain provided additional structure and power. Polished, focused and generous, with red plum and cherry flavors in an elegant package, framed with fine tannins. A savory, meaty note runs through this at a subterranean level. Lingers beautifully. Drink through 2028. The 2007 Corliss was rated 94 by Wine Enthusiast, concentrated and wonderfully aromatic, this wine aged for 32 months in 75% new French oak, plus another 28 months in bottle prior to its release. Smooth as silk, it mixes berry, cherry and plum notes, with whiffs of smoke, green tea, and chocolate. Just past the stage of primary fruit flavors, it drinks beautifully, but can certainly be cellared for another decade at least. Last but certainly not least, the 2008 Columbia Crest Reserve. Awarded 93 points by Wine Spectator; chewy with tannin, but bursting with fresh currant and plum, sneaking in hints of mint and black tea as the finish lingers. A graceful wine that has miles to go. Best from 2013 through 2019.

Trio of 2013 Napa Cabs from wineries featured at LDV 2017, one each: Pride Mountain Vineyards, Spottswoode Estate Vineyard & Winery, and Vineyard 7 & 8.

Three spectacular bottles of 2013 Cabernet Sauvignon from the wineries featured at L’Amour du Vin 2017. The Pride Mountain 2013 Cab was sourced 72% Napa County, 28% Sonoma County; and was awarded 94 points by Robert Parker: a terrific nose of blackberry, chocolate, licorice and cassis. Some toast is in the background, but clearly, the fruit is dominant in this full-bodied, voluptuously textured and opulent, dramatic, flamboyant Cabernet Sauvignon. It is open and delicious and shows no signs of closing down any time soon. The Spottswoode 2013 Estate Cab is a blend of grapes from Napa Valley and St. Helena. A touch darker in color James Laube rated 90 points describing it as having rich mocha and blackberry aromas fold over to cedar and spice notes, showing a measure of suppleness in the midpalate and ending with nice structure and firm, gripping tannins. It offers great intensity and the flavors are an exquisite mix of earthy black fruits. Last but not least, Vineyard 7 & 8 – currently rated 96 by Wine Spectator and 92 by Robert Parker. It is 100% Cabernet Sauvignon [sourced from Spring Mountain] and shows the high-elevation, chocolaty, ripe blackcurrant fruit that one expects in mountain Cabernet, with good acidity, ripe tannin and a long, heady, rich finish. It is full-bodied and should drink nicely for at least two decades. An amazing trio worth saving for years to come!

After some deliberation, Michael purchased the farm with his brother-in-law (the French idiom is “beaux frères”), Robert Parker, Jr. Michael uprooted his young family from Colorado and moved to the farm the following summer. One bottle [750mL] Cantina Mascarello 1979 Barolo, Denominazione d’Origine Controllata

A recent retrospective from Antonio Galloni notes that Barolo became all the rage in the 1960s. Nestled just off Via Roma in the heart of the village of Barolo, Cantina Bartolo Mascarello remains a bastion of traditional, artisan values in Piedmont. Giulio Mascarello founded Cantina Mascarello in 1920 and owns Nebbiolo parcels in the towns of Barolo and La Morra, all of which have been in the family for two or more generations. Maria-Theresa Mascarello has now taken the reins of the operation, but this 1979 vintage would have been the handy work of her grandfather. Smoky nose of tobacco and rosemary, floral and rhubarb notes with sweet herbs and chinato scents. Strong, dry tannis, complex, and very satisfying. Drink by 2039.

The To Kalon’s biggest secret is its acidity. Next, the Missouri Hopper exhibits a balanced acidity and soft tannins. The Dr. Crane is a deep, dark and lush. The challenge was to protect the fruit from the sun, in order to pick at the opium ripeness without dehydration, to achieve the perfect taste. All with excellent ratings by Robert Parker: The Missouri Hopper and To Kalon scored a 98 and the Dr. Crane a 99.

One magnum [1.5L] Hudson 2014 Old Master Red Bordeaux Blend, Napa Valley, Carneros; PLUS tour and tasting at Hudson Ranch for up to six guests

Located in the heart of Napa Valley’s Carneros District, Hudson Vineyards produces grapes from uniquely situated sites on two hundred acres of vineyards. Their premium grapes are sold to 27 wineries in Napa and Sonoma counties, some of which produce wines from specific vineyard sites identified as distinct and bear the ‘Hudson Vineyards’ designation on their labels. But this 2014 Bordeaux beauty is the winery’s own bottling and the result of thirty years of meticulous winegrowing and winemaking experience. Composed of 65% Cabernet Sauvignon and 35% Merlot, this wine has a beautiful deep garnet-purple color. The intensity and flavor is indicative of the Carneros District where the cooling breezes off the Bay of San Francisco allow grapes a longer hang time to develop these without sacrificing acidity and balance. Rated 92+ by Wine Advocate Critic Lisa Perrotti-Brown: “exotic spice-laced nose over notions of cassis, wild blueberries, preserved plums and dusty earth, plus wafts of cedar chest and potpourri. The medium to full-bodied palate delivers spectacular energy, featuring taut, muscular black and blue fruit with a firm, grainy backbone and plenty of freshness, finishing with great length and a spicy kick.” For the winning bidder and up to 5 guests a tour and tasting experience awaits them at the winery’s ranch, which has a unique collection of commissioned art. Expires March 1, 2020.

Three bottles [750mL] Pulido-Walker 2015 Cabernet Sauvignon, Panek Vineyard, Napa Valley, in custom birchwood box

Proprietors Mark Pulido and Donna Walker have a long history in Napa Valley, building relationships and putting down roots in the community. In the early 1980s, Donna and Mark began making regular trips to the Valley, meeting vintners at iconic cellars where they often tasted from the barrel. They were drawn into tasting room discussions about harvest and the rhythms of crafting wine. Pulido-Walker is a natural outgrowth of the couple’s passion, as collectors, for the place and its promise. Their Mt. Veeder Estate is a testament to the family’s long-term commitment to Napa Valley and view toward the future. The Pulido-Walker label is inscribed with an ancient apothecary weight bearing the seasonal symbols of alchemy. This Old World instrument of precise measure expresses the family’s ardent determination to craft extraordinary wine authentic to its unique terroir.

With winemaker Thomas Rivers Brown, distinct lots are selected from singular vineyards where the natural alchemy of geography, soil, climate, and clone combine to yield a 100% Cabernet Sauvignon greater than the sum of its parts. This 2015 Cabernet Sauvignon is sourced from Clones 6, 7, and 169 in St. Helena’s Panek Vineyard, cultivated on a rocky knoll in the shadow of the Mayacamas. Composed of 100% Cabernet Sauvignon aged for 20 months in French oak, 80% new, the wine has a deep garnet-purple color and gives up coffee, dried herbs and garrigue notions over a crème de cassis, blueberry pie and red currant jelly core with touches of cumin seed and black pepper – rated 97 by both Robert Parker. Medium to full-bodied, the taut, muscular palate is laden with savory and black fruit layers, featuring firm, ripe, grainy tannins and lovely freshness, finishing long and earthy. A glass of this red will leave you wanting more!

One double magnum [3L] Caymus 2012 Special Selection Cabernet Sauvignon, Napa Valley; and one bottle [750mL] Caymus 2010 Special Selection Cabernet Sauvignon

Caymus is consistently one of California’s best Cabs. You will not find a vintner with more enthusiasm and passion than owner/winemaker Charlie “Chuck” Wagner. He and his wife Lorna purchased land near the family farm in 1941 where they planted fruit orchards and wine grapes. It wasn’t long before Chuck pulled out the entire orchard to plant Pinot Noir and a clone of Cabernet Sauvignon acquired from Stags Leap grower Nathan Fay. Caymus introduced their first “Special Selection” Cabernet in 1975 and hasn’t stopped since. The wine has collected many accolades, including being the only wine to twice be selected “Wine of the Year” by Wine Spectator (in 1989 and 1994).

The 2012 Special Selection Cabernet Sauvignon is a rich, dense ruby color, hints at the dark fruit nose of blackberry and currant that carries through to the palate, interwoven with complex aromas of black licorice, anise and crème de cassis. Receiving and excellent rating 98 by Wilfred Wong and 96 by Robert Parker, you will want to add this special edition to your collection.

The 2010 Special Selection Cabernet Sauvignon is also rated high, receiving a 98 by Robert Parker. This Opaque crimson color wine, is intriguing to the nose of freshly tilled Napa vineyard soil. The presence of this wine includes fine textural components balanced by an array of flavors including; ripe cherry, dried rose petal, cacao, mocha and cassis. A seamless, rich and alluring, youthful Napa Cabernet; perfectly complex and balanced. This will go down in our books as a difficult year that yielded a small production of very fine wine. Another great addition!

Two magnums [1.5L] Rudd 2012 Oakville Estate, Napa Valley: one each, Red and Samantha’s Cabernet Sauvignon

Rudd Oakville Estate embodies a sense of timelessness, passing down expertise and commitment to the winery’s vision through generations. Samantha Rudd, now at the helm of the winery, was the featured vintner of L’Amour du Vin 2012. She is continuing the estate’s tradition of standing out as an exceptional place with unmatched terrior – uniquely situated within Napa Valley with a geologic backbone of volcanic rock weathered into core stone bedrock and alluvial sediments creating iron-rich, well-drained soil idea for growing grapes. The rocky, red, volcanic terrain of Rudd’s estate vineyards along Oakville’s eastern foothills is the ideal terroir for Cabernet Sauvignon. And if you’ve ever had the opportunity to visit or drive by during the Summer months you’ll notice the soil it is great for sunflowers too! For each vintage of the Oakville Estate Red, the winemaker selects the finest vineyard to blend. The 2012 vintage is dark in color with concentrated freshness. Persistence and freshness are remarkable for the wine’s density and ripe aromatics. With aerations, cedar and dry rosemary become more evident on the nose. A refined, fresh finished is accompanied by a hit of warm tobacco smoke and cocoa powder. Rated 94 by Robert Parker.

The 2012 Samantha’s Cabernet Sauvignon, rated 92 by Wine Spectator, presents a bold, assertive style that packs in a lot of flavor, with dense dark berry, mocha, mineral, cedar and loamy earth notes driving the core flavors. Though big and rowdy, there’s a measure of finesse and suppleness here that moves to the forefront. Named for winery founder Leslie Rudd’s daughter Samantha who shares and is carrying on his passion for handcrafting distinctive wines of artisanal quality. Both of these bottles are an excellent representation of what Rudd Oakville Estate has to offer!

One magnum [1.5L] FUTO OV | SL 2014 Proprietary Red Blend PLUS tour and tasting for 4

Futo Wines began in 2002 when Tom and Kyle Futo purchased Oakford Vineyards, a 40-acre property with seven acres of vineyard that had been established in the 80s. In 2004, an adjoining 117-acre parcel was added to the property, of which six acres were planted to vineyard under the direction of David Abreu and the winery’s first winemaker Mark Aubert. Today Futo is an uncompromising union of form and function under the direction of winemaker Jason Exposto. Tucked into the hills of Oakville, the winery and its activities are streamlined and gravity fed from the receipt of fruit to the bottling line. Surrounded by oaks and old growth forests the winery’s serenity belies its location in the hub of the Napa Valley, which the winning bidder and three of their guests will get to experience firsthand! Tours and tastings are by invitation only and must be scheduled on a mutually agreeable date.

Now, let’s get to the wine! Antonio Galloni said of Futo’s OV|SL Proprietary Red Blend – “These wines are stunning. Simple as that.” And other critics agree! 97 from Robert Parker and a nearly perfect 99 from James Suckling. Totally seamless in the glass, the 2014 OV|SL is all about levity. Inky blue/purplish fruit, spice, lavender, and licorice give this vintage its many shades of nuance. But it is the harmony and balance that speaks to the synergy of our two vineyard sites that really elevate the wine into the sublime. The wine is 81% Cabernet Sauvignon, 11% Merlot, 5% Petit Verdot and 3% Cabernet Franc. Sourced from FUTO’s original property, which sits just below BOND winery and Harlan Estate, and the newest acquisition on the southeastern corner of Stags Leap District; this wine can be enjoyed now or cellared until 2046. Top-night, AMAZING juice – only 499 cases bottled. Don’t miss this opportunity – bid!

Three vintage vertical [2011-2013] Lail Vineyards J Daniel Cuvée Cabernet Sauvignon, Napa Valley

Robin Lail is fourth generation vintner and a true icon of Napa Valley who teamed up with winemaker Philippe Melka to create her own label. Unsurprisingly high marks from critics. Their flagship wine the J. Daniel Cuvée, a beautifully integrated, Bordeaux-style blend of estate and premium vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon selections. Of this lot – the 2011 offers up notes of cedar wood, tobacco leaf, underbrush and red and black currants; medium-bodied with soft tannin. Rated 89 by Robert Parker, 94 by Antonio Galloni, and 91 by Stephen Tanzer. The 2012, arguably the brightest star of the bunch, was rated 100 points by Robert Parker: a wine that has an inky purple color, an almost amazing bouquet that reminded me of 1989 Chateau Montrose when it was young. Sweet almost truffle-infused earth, graphite, forest floor, blackcurrant and black cherry notes are followed by a full-bodied wine with a hint of mocha and licorice. Superb purity, an incremental, yet full-bodied mouthfeel, and an extravagant, layered texture and finish make for the finest wine Robin Lail has produced to date. The 2013, although not quite a perfected, landed a 99+ from RP: comes across like a Napa version of the famous Château Montrose in Bordeaux’s St.-Estephe. Earthy notes intermixed with chocolate, blackcurrant liqueur, grilled meats and spice are all present in this opaque purple wine. Graphite and floral notes are also present. It is full-bodied and ripe with beautiful purity and superbly integrated acidity, alcohol, wood and tannin. All of these beauties can cellar for the two decades or more!

Overnight stay for two at Amizetta Estate & Vineyard Family Hunting Cabin on Howell Mountain, St. Helena; includes three bottles [750mL] Amizetta Estate 2016 Cabernet Sauvignon, Napa Valley; PLUS private tour and tasting

Stay overnight on the beautiful Amizetta Estate and Vineyard property in Napa Valley. Nestled over scenic views of the Conn Valley in Napa at the base of Howell Mountain, Amizetta’s elevation reaches over 1,000 feet and the vineyard has panoramic views of Lake Hennessey, Pritchet Hill, and the San Pablo Bay. To say the property is gorgeous is an understatement!

Stay in the Amizetta family hunting cabin located on the estate. First converted from a stable to cabin by former president of Paramount pictures, the building dates back to the early 1990. When Amizetta owners, the Clark Family, acquired the property in 1980 they remodeled to a small cottage. It has one bedroom and bath with claw-foot tub, open plan living area, fully equipped kitchen, and spacious outdoor entertaining area.

Amizetta Winery was built in 1984 after Spencer and Amizetta finished planting their terraced hillside vineyards. They wanted to create a small facility that matched the average annual yields of their land’s harvest. They enlisted the services of Justin Meyer (the founder and winemaker of Silver Oak Cellars) to help design their dream winery. Together the three created a design they dubbed ‘a winemaker’s winery.’ The name, Amizetta, has been in the family for over 15 generations and has the Latin root of “ami” or friend.  When you visit, you will learn how perfectly the name fits.

The winery’s unique location next to the Los Pasados State Forest and its’ all-natural mineral water creates rich, complex flavors in the grapes. Four bottles [750mL] Buffalo Trace Signature Whiskeys, one each: Rocky Hill Farms single barrel Kentucky Straight Bourbon (100 proof), Thomas H. Handy Sazerac Straight Rye Whiskey, George T. Stagg Kentucky Straight Bourbon, and 23 Year Limited Edition Pappy Van Winkle Family Reserve Kentucky Straight Bourbon; PLUS, lunch and behind the scenes tour of Buffalo Trace Distillery for up to ten guests

Located in Frankfort, Kentucky, Buffalo Trace Distillery has been producing award winning bourbon and whiskey for over two centuries. Named a National Historic Landmark in 2013, the distillery has overcome floods, fires, and Prohibition throughout its 200 years of history. Even still, in 2000 it was the first American distillery to win Whiskey Advocate’s prestigious “Distillery of the Year” award. Included in this lot are four bottles of their signature whiskeys and bourbons, each barrel aged to perfection. Their Rocky Hill Farms single barrel Kentucky Straight Bourbon (100 proof) features tantalizing aromas of walnut, dried red fruits, spices, cocoa, and marshmallow that beautifully complement the rich, smooth flavors of dark chocolate, almond, coffee, tobacco, and dark caramel on the palate. The Thomas H. Handy Sazerac Straight Rye Whiskey (128.8 proof) is bottled directly from the barrel. This spicy whiskey features bold flavors of toffee, fig cake, and candied fruit, paired perfectly with mint, cinnamon, and clove. The long finish leaves the palate warm with hints of allspice, coconut, and nutmeg. Their George T. Stagg Kentucky Straight Bourbon (124.9 proof) is aged in new charred oak barrels for at least 15 years before being bottled directly from the barrel. Its robust and intense palate encompasses flavors of toffee, dark chocolate, vanilla, fudge, nougat, and molasses blended with subtle touches of dates, tobacco, dark berries, spearmint, and coffee. Because of its hearty flavor, it is best enjoyed mixed with a little water. Most notably in this lot is Buffalo Trace’s limited addition 23 Year Pappy Van Winkle Family Reserve Kentucky Straight Bourbon (95.6 proof). Earning itself a 95 from Whiskey Advocate, this whiskey is sweet with an oaky finish. Flavors of vanilla, maple, honey, citrus, and spice complement aromas of caramel and cream delicately mingled with oak, nuts, and leather. Aged for 23 years and meticulously selected and bottled, this whiskey is best enjoyed neat.
