The family also owns and operates the estates including the Bricco Rocche in this lot. One magnum [1.5L] Turley 2013 Zinfandel, Fredericks Vineyard, Sonoma County

With a heavy emphasis on wines produced from old vines, Turley has established itself as a fantastic producer of Petite Syrahs and Zinfandels. Since its beginning in 1993, Turley has expanded to a production of 47 wines from over 50 vineyards. Turley is best known for their delectable Zinfandels, which always feature big, mouthwatering fruit and long, satisfying finishes. This 2013, sourced from Fredericks Vineyard, is no exception.  These vines were originally planted in 1937, and the fruit they produce now in their old age is especially potent.  Rated 94 by Robert Parker: will awaken your palate with positively explosive black fruit finely paired with bright acidity and firm tannins. One magnum [1.5L] Mending Wall 2015 Cabernet Sauvignon, Napa Valley

Mending Wall draws its name from a Robert Frost poem about two neighbors who work together each spring rebuilding the wall that separates them. Although one builder questions the wall, the other answers, “good fences make good neighbors.”

A collaboration between three owners, Kathy and Frank Dotzler of Outpost, Mark Pulido and Donna Walker of Pulido-Walker, and winemaker Thomas Brown, Mending Wall is all about bringing together the grapes of the many small family-owned vineyards throughout the Napa Valley. The winemakers at Mending Wall consider the 2015 to be their best production yet in their relatively short history. This 2015 vintage is delicately balanced and impeccably perfumed, with brilliant, full notes, and should drink well for the next 8-10 years. Crafted with delicates tasting notes of spiced plum, blueberries, and cocoa powder, this hefty Cab is full of bright red fruit that rolls into finely structured tannins. An excellent representation of what Mending Wall has to offer!

One bottle [750mL] Dominus Estate 1998 Cabernet Sauvignon, Napa Valley

Christian Moueix is one of the most respected wine producers in the world. Although he would later return to France to manage his family’s vineyards, which include Chateaux Petrus, La Fleur-Petrus,Trotanoy, and Magdelaine, Christian ultimately fell in love with the Napa Valley while attending UC Davis. We are lucky he did – Christian’s wines have, for years, been beloved and highly demanded wine out of California.

This 1998 blend of 83% Cabernet Sauvignon, 13% Cabernet Franc, and 4% Petit Verdot is yet another success from Dominus. Rated 95 by Wine & Spirits and 91 by Wine Spectator, this dense red is ripe with licorice, black currant, and spice on the nose. A colorful medley of blueberry, black currant, and violet on the palate, this blend ends on a lasting high note of refined oak and firm tannin. Be sure to add this bottle to your collection today!

One magnum [1.5L] Cliff Lede 2014 Cabernet Sauvignon, Stags Leap District

When Cliff Lede replanted his sixty-acre estate in 2002, he named each new vineyard block after one of his favorite rock songs. Since then, Cliff Lede Vineyards’ commitment to sustainability and excellence in winemaking has rocked the wine world much like the songs for which its vineyards are named. Robert Parker rated this 2014 Cabernet Sauvignon 93, describing it as “just a stunner that is a blend of 80% Cabernet Sauvignon, 9% Petit Verdot, 5% Cabernet Franc and the rest Malbec and Merlot. Dense purple in color, it has a beautiful nose of spring flowers, blackcurrants, subtle background oak and licorice and a long, opulent mouthfeel. This is a beauty that can be drunk now or cellared for another 15 more years. It is a heck of a wine and irresistible.”  What else needs to be said?

Three bottles [750mL] Turley Central Coast Zinfandel: 2013 Presenti; 2015 Duarte;  2013 Ueberroth

Now an established vintner in Paso Robles, Larry Turley was born in Tennessee and raised in Georgia. Later he moved to California where he soon became an emergency room physician by day and a vintner/farmer by night. It is said that Larry never met an old vine he did not like. He now makes 28 wines from 35 separate vineyards with vines that date back to the late 1800’s. His best wines are probably his Zinfandels and his Petit Syrahs.

This lot includes three outstanding Zins. From the 2013 vintage come the Presenti Vineyard and the Uberruth Vineyard Zainfandels. The former is sourced from vines planted in 1885 and the latter in 1920. And old and a new Zin you could say. Parker rated the Uberruth a 95 and Antonio Galloni gave it 94. It should be ready to drink in a year or two and will last another two decades. The Presenti was awarded a 94 by Parker, 93 by Galloni and a 93 by Wine Spectator. Ready now, this will last another ten years. And form the 2014 vintage, the Contra Costa county Duarte contains some of the softest and silkiest tannins you will find in a Zinfandel. All the pundits awarded scores higher than 90 and agree that this has at least another 10 years.

These wines were purchased from the winery on a visit to Paso Robles and are probably not readily available in this market place. So if you are a Zin fan, this is your lot!

Two magnums [1.5L] Robert Foley Napa Valley wine: 2015 Red Wine, Griffin; 2013 Merlot

The biblical beast of Revelation rules the first of this lot. A red wine blend, the Griffin is a combination of classic claret types (Cabernet, Malbec, Merlot, Petit Verdot) and Rhone-rooted varieties (Syrah, Petite Sirah, Charbono). It was bottled in the spring of 2017 making it a youthful wine with aging potential. The exact blend of the 2015 Griffin is 28% Merlot, 19% Petite Sirah, 14% Charbono, 12% Malbec, 11% Syrah, 10% Petit Verdot, and 6% Cabernet Sauvignon. The second wine, a 2013 Merlot, resembles a Cabernet in many ways. Dark and ripe, candied fruit, black cherry and currants carry this wine with a taste of coffee. The spiciness comes from the Robert Foley Vineyard’s own Howell Mountain Fruit. The 2013 Merlot has an early maturity and a dry sweetness and is primarily a table wine. It scored 85 and 89 by critics.

SILENT LOT 121

Two bottles [750mL] Bordeaux from Acclaimed 2010  Vintage: Château Saint-Pierre, Saint-Julian; and Château Rouget, Pomerol

These two Bordeaux vintage bottles complement each other beautifully. The Chateau Saint-Pierre is a classic, layered mix of cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot that features aromas of blackberries, plum and cedar. When tasting, it has a full-bodied blend of espresso, truffles, blackberry and licorice, which also give it a deep, rich purple hue. It hails from one of the smallest estates in St. Julien, Gloria, where only a few thousand cases were produced. Experts recommend letting it rest laying down for ten or more years to give the flavors the most impact.

In contrast, the Chateau Rouget is expansive with ripe notes of black cherry, florals, vanilla to make it scrumptious and light. Silky tannins and firm structure keep the finish sweet but with a touch of spice. This Pomero is both sexy and delicious, with a color of a bright red mixed with a dark purple to fit the yin and yang of its flavors. As with the Saint-Pierre, this wine will only get better with age.

Notes of blueberry, fruitcake, licorice and other sweets; balanced by the smooth tannins and smoky flavors underneath. No area produces reds quite like Edna Valley in California, and Alban Vineyards has a long history of perfecting Rhone varieties as the first American winery to do so. They created a delectable way to frame the bold and beautiful essence within the Reva (named for owner John Alban’s mother), and critics across the board agree, with Robert Parker and Wine Spectator giving it a 96 and 94, respectively. This deep purple wine has a bold, full flavor that only builds momentum as you taste, but never to the point of excess.

In 1998, Bell opened its doors to the public to share the beauty of both the land and the creation of their products. Three bottles [750mL] Châteauneuf-du-Pape reds: Château de la Gardine 1998; Domaine Bois de Boursan 1998 Cuvée de Felix; Domaine de la Mordorée 2000 Cuvée La Reine des Bois

Châteauneuf-du-Pape or the “Pope’s new castle” gets its name from this landmark of the Rhône and is a reminder of the time in the 1300s when the pope resided in Avignon instead of Rome. It is a food-friendly wine with a generosity of flavors and sumptuous texture. As Robert Parker stated in “A Crush on Châteauneuf-du-Pape” printed in Food and Wine magazine, CdP offers “immediate gratification both intellectual and hedonistic in nature. Its wide array of aromas and flavors are reminiscent of a Provençal marketplace while its texture—rich and round, sumptuous and opulent—is virtually unmatched by most of the wines of the world.”  CdPs have always been farmed organically or biodynamically as the region’s abundant sunshine and le mistral winds eliminate the need for herbicides and pesticides. This lot is an unmatched opportunity to taste the variety this appellation has to offer from the fruit forward to the more structured and represents a wide range of techniques and blends of the 13 original grape varieties.

The Château de la Gardine 1998 has a dark plum/ruby/purple color, with notes of graphite, chocolate, espresso roast, black berry, and cassis – rated 94+ by Robert Parker. The brilliant Domaine Bois de Boursan 1998 Cuvée de Felix (the debut vintage) is dark plum/garnet, with an extraordinary nose of graphite, lavender, blueberry, black raspberry, garrigue, and licorice, the wine offers up an abundant concoction of Provencal scents followed by a full-bodied, opulent mouthfeel that has hit its plateau of maturity – rated 94+ by RP. The Domaine de la Mordorée 2000 Cuvée La Reine des Bois – rated 97 by RP – has a sexy, voluptuous texture to go with classic Mordoree spice, licorice, graphite and black cherry and currant-styled fruit; ready to enjoy now.

Four bottles [750mL] Red Wine Flight: Caymus 2015 Grand Durif, Suisun Valley; Caymus 2015 Cabernet Sauvignon, Napa Valley; Red Schooner Voyage 5 2014 Malbec, Napa Valley; Emmolo 2015 Merlot, Napa Valley

Chuck Wagner and his family first launched Caymus vineyards in 1971.  Since then, their Cabs have been a hallmark of fine Napa Valley wines. One of Chuck’s greatest rewards has been to see three of his children begin making their own wine, now collectively labeled alongside Caymus as the Wagner Family of Wine. This collection of four recent vintages of various Wagner red wines is a fantastic sampling of the family’s continued dedication to the craft.

Robert Parker’s Wine Advocate rated the Caymus 2015 Cabernet Sauvignon 94, writing that “the perfumed black fruit preserves and chocolate-laced notes completely pack the full-bodied palate, with soft, velvety tannins and just enough freshness, finishing very long and very spicy.” Enjoy anytime through the next 15 years.  The Caymus 2015 Grand Durif received 93 from Wine Spectator and was lauded for its strong notes of mocha and chocolate, as well as its harmonious tannins and rich blackberry. This Petite Sirah will drink beautifully through 2026.

The Red Schooner Voyage 5 Malbec is sourced from Malbec grown in the Andes and produced using the same techniques as Caymus’ Cabs. Instead of having a vintage, these wines include a voyage number, with Voyage 5 representing the 2014 vintage. This balanced Malbec is rich with juicy red fruit on the palate and finishes with delicate tannins.

Produced by Jenny Wagner and named for her mother, Cheryl Emmolo, the Emmolo 2015 Merlot is a fantastic entry into the Wagner Family collection of wines.  Rated 88 by Robert Parker, he describes it as “a fleshy, dense ruby/purple-colored wine with a full body, loads of fruit and straightforward, chunky, fleshy, consumer-friendly, big, chewy Merlot.”  Best enjoyed by 2024.

Six bottles [750mL] assorted Hawke’s Bay wines: one bottle Trinity Hill 2016, Rose; one bottle Trinity Hill 2014, The Gimblett; one bottle Craggy Range 2014, Sophia; one bottle Craggy Range 2016, Pinot Grigio; one bottle Elephant Hill 2015, Chardonnay ; one bottle Elephant Hill 2014, Syrah

Last year on a trip to New Zealand, we had the pleasure of touring these three wineries. While most of what we get in this country is New Zealand Sauvignon Blanc, their wines are much more diverse than that — and much of it stays there. This collection of wines are not ones you will find in Knoxville, and rarely will you see them in the states. But they are all fabulous wines that show the diversity of what the Kiwis are making. These are all ready to be consumed now. The fruit flavors of all are bright and the wines are definitely food friendly.

One magnum [1.5L] Hudson 2014 Old Master Red Blend; PLUS tour, tasting, and lunch for up to six guests

Hudson Vineyards produces grapes from uniquely situated sites on two hundred acres of vineyards. Thirty years of meticulous winegrowing and winemaking experience goes into each bottle. Additionally, Hudson’s premium grapes are sold to 27 wineries in Napa and Sonoma counties, some of which produce wines from specific vineyard sites identified as distinct and bear the ‘Hudson Vineyards’ designation on their labels.

Taking a step back and letting the grapes do the work was Hudson’s philosophy for this red blend. The Cabernet Franc and Merlot lots were aged in separate French oak barrels for 12 months, then blended together and barrel aged again for 8 months prior to bottling. The bottles are then aged an additional 14 months. The time aging gives complex flavors – including violets, preserved plums, cedar and leather – a chance to interweave into a fresh, energetic red with a hint of spice at the end. Robert Parker considers this 2014 vintage as the finest Old Master red blend to date, with a rating of 92+ points.

A real treat with this lot is the tour, tasting and lunch at the Hudson Winery, which isn’t open to the public. Located in Napa Valley’s Carneros district, it’s nestled perfectly in wine country where you can feel the ocean breeze of the bay of San Francisco while tasting amazing Hudson wines!

Six assorted bottles of dessert wine from France and Austria: three half-bottles [375mL] of Sauternes: 2001 Château Doisy-Védrines; 2003 Château d’Yquem; 2003 Château Raymond-Lafon; one bottle [750mL] Château Rieussec 2003 Sauternes; one jennie [500mL] Philippe Delesvaux 1999 Coteaux du Layon, Sélection de Grains Noble; one half-bottle [375ml] Kracher #9 1999 Chardonnay Trockenbeeren Auslese

End your next dinner on a sweet note by collecting this sampling of beautiful and historic dessert wines from France and Austria. These wines, which are truly a piece of winemaking history, are an invaluable addition to any collection.

Château Doisy-Védrines, found in the finest area of Sauternes once known as Haut-Barsac, consistently produces some of the best dessert wines out of the region. The 2001 vintage, rated 90 by Wine Advocate and 93 by Wine Spectator, balances succulent honey and apricot with crisp acidity and bright citrus.

The 400-year-old Château d’Yquem estate, steeped in history and intrigue, is the only estate to be designated Premier Cru Supérieur. Their 2003, rated 94 by Wine Advocate and 97 by Wine Spectator is a nuanced burst of fruit, caramel, and honey on the nose that finishes with orange and refreshing acidity on the palate.

Formerly an estate of relative obscurity in Sauternes, Château Raymond-Lafon was purchased in 1972 by Pierre Meslier, the former technical director of Château d’Yquem. Château Raymond-Lafon quickly became one of the most sought-after wines out of the region, and the Meslier family continues to run the vineyard to this day. Its 2003 blend, rated 92 by Wine Advocate and Wine Spectator, is the result of an especially sweet vintage, with mouthwatering grapefruit and a lasting finish.

Another estate hailing from a storied past, Château Rieussec was originally owned by Carmelite monks in the 18th century before being confiscated and auction off during the revolution. It eventually wound up in the hands of the Rothschild family, who sought to refine and modernize the measures used at the estate. The resulting wines speak for themselves. The 2003, rated 95 by Wine Spectator, pairs subtle tropical fruit with butterscotch and subdued acidity.

Hailing from the Loire Valley, Domaine Phillipe Delesvaux is owned by Philippe and his wife Catherine.  They have been making wine since 1978, but, in Philippe’s words, “in 1985 [they] decided to make good wine.” The vineyards, sitting on top of a hill and on two valleys, receive the trifecta of mist, sun, and wind necessary for Delesvaux’s botrytis-affected wines.  Their 1999, rated 99 by Wine Spectator, is an exceptional display of pear, almond, and quince, with a spicy finish.

Kracher, nestled by Lake Neusiedl, is perfectly situated for botrytis-affected wines.  Alois Kracher, who joined his father’s winery ins 1981, helped to spearhead a renaissance of Austrian dessert wines in the 1990s. This 1999 was rated 98 by Wine Advocate and 94 by Wine Spectator.  The big dessert wine, steeped in apricot and caramel, is meant to last.

Six bottle [750mL] vertical Jordan 2005-2010 Cabernet Sauvignon, Alexander Valley

Jordan is a L’Amour du Vin patron favorite, and for good reason! Located in the heart of Sonoma’s Alexander Valley, their mission is to create Bordeaux style California Cabernet Sauvignons. Since its founding in 1972, Jordan has created a new standard for wine quality and wine country hospitality and has become a master of Cabernet Sauvignons and you can count on these bottles aging beautifully. These full reds encompass many different flavors, from blueberry and vanilla to dried cherry and tobacco. However, no one flavor ever steals the show, as they are very well balanced. Each flavor is but a hint, and the round tannins at the end help to keep the different notes cohesive and complimentary. Alexander Valley is in the heart of wine country, which further emboldens the flavors of the grapes as they age. These Cabernets can be perfectly paired with a romantic dinner or sipped with friends on a late summer night. The real stand out in this lot is the 2010 vintage, which was rated 90 points by Wine Enthusiast.

For nearly as long as Kentucky has been a state, its name has been synonymous with the best in bourbon and whiskey, and Old Forester Distillery has made a name for itself among many exceptional distillers. First introduced on Louisville’s Whiskey Row in the 1870s, Old Forester has since been a dedicated producer of only the finest bourbon.  Not even Prohibition could hold them back!  With a federal license to continue producing for medicinal purposes during Prohibition, Old Forester is the only bourbon to be continually produced before, during, and after Prohibition.

The winner of this lot will take home a selection of eight of Old Forester’s masterworks. Birthday Bourbon, a single-batch selection by the master distiller from the archives that celebrates found George Brown’s birthday on September 2.  This unique bourbon, different each year, is a special find and a true pleasure for fans of Old Forester’s work.  Film aficionados may recognize Statesman as the bourbon featured in Kingsman: The Golden Circle, a warm balance of heat and spice inspired by the bold and dynamic characters from the film.  The 1897 Bottle in Bond, on the other hand, is a piece of history, made to honor the U.S. Bottled-in-Bond Act of 1897.  By requiring bottles labeled as such to be the product of one season, one distiller, and one distillery, this act helped to raise the bar for quality starting in 1870, and Old Forester, as America’s First Bottled Bourbon, was happy to embrace this change.

Lovers of history and film, as well as those simply looking for exceptional whiskey, will be please to discover there is something for everyone in this expansive sampling of Old Forester’s craft.

One magnum [1.5L] Chateau d’Yquem 1988 Sauternes

This pretty wine is well-rated by critics, reaching 99 out of 100. A Sauvignon Blanc, it is grown in the Sauternes region of Bordeaux, France. The Chateau d’Yquem 1988 Sauternes is, by all accounts, the world’s most famous dessert wine, lush and balanced, with an alcohol content of 12/13%. d’Yquem wines can show flavorings of stone fruit, mandarin, toast and vanilla when young and can develop rich complexities with age. In top vintages it can be cellared for 50 years or more. The d’Yquem estate was owned by the King of England in the Middle Ages and has been producing late-harvest wines since at least the late 1500s. The 290 acre vineyard is situated on the highest hill in Sauternes. Its soil is ideal for producing dessert wines, with a warm, dry topsoil of pebbles and gravel topping clay subsoil that holds water well.

Scents of marmalade, mandarin, burnt honey, and citrus fruit create a medium-bodied palate with impressive weight earning this 1988 bottle a rating of up to 98. Robert Parker describes it as, “beautifully balanced with notes of apricot, white chocolate, and orange peel towards the harmonious and tensile finish.” With a long bottle life and a long finish, this wine is a glorious and historical addition to any dessert wine lover’s collection!

One magnum [1.5L] Favia 2014 “Cerro Sur” Red Blend, Napa Valley; PLUS private tasting for four at restored historic winery in Coombsville

The fruit for Favia’s Cerro Sur (“South Hill”) bottling comes from a breathtaking mountaintop block of Cabernet Franc, planted nearly 40 years ago on the famed Rancho Chimiles, high in the Vaca Mountains.

The Cabernet Franc character in the 2014 vintage is so strong, only a small percentage of Cabernet Sauvignon was needed to round out the wine and provide a core of black fruit – with notes of plum, black cherry, orange oil and even hints of cinnamon, lavender and cocoa, this red is a chameleon of flavors that delight the palate with each sip. Aged in French oak barrels for 22 months and bottled without filtration or fining leaves this wine complex and a joy to decipher. Rated 95+ by Robert Parker this wine should be at its best in 3-4 years and keep for 20 or more.

Included in this lot is a private tasting for four at the historic winery in Coombsville AVA in Napa Valley, you can get a first-hand look (and taste!) inside the holistic approach Favia takes not only with their wine, but the 6.5-acre farm and vineyard as well. Expires March 3, 2019.

One magnum [1.5L] Amuse Bouche 2015 Pomerol-Style Merlot, Napa Valley, with label by Jacque Pepin

The name Heidi Barrett has long been synonymous with singular California wine.  In addition to establishing Screaming Eagle as one of the preeminent wineries in the world, Heidi has had stints at Grace Family Vineyards, Lamborn Family, and Paradigm Winery. Since 2002, Heid has partnered with John Schwartz to produce Amuse Bouche Pomerol-style wine in limited production, with each vintage featuring a uniquely designed artistic label.

It’s not easy to successfully merge supple with firm, sweet with spice, or bold with restrained. However, Amuse Bouche orchestrated the juxtapositions perfectly in their 2015 Pomerol-style Merlot, which features tones of plums, chocolate, bay leaves, tobacco, leather and even a hint of marmite.  The label, designed by famed chef Jacques Pépin, is a radiant depiction of food, wine, and art – no doubt a vivid preview of what’s to come. A brilliant shade of granite purple, the chewy tannins make it savory while the juicy flavors of cherry and plum help embolden the character further without making it heavy. This blend of 88% Merlot and 12% Cabernet Franc, rated 92 by Wine Advocate is excellent to drink now and can continue to age for the next 15 years.

This 2015 Amuse Bouche Merlot is yet another achievement on Heidi’s long list of outstanding wines – add it to your collection today!

A Baker’s Dozen of Robert Biale Vineyards Red Wine

One (750ml) bottle each:

  • 2015 Zinfandel, Aldo’s Vineyard, Oak Knoll District, Napa Valley
  • 2015 Zinfandel, Bedrock Vineyard, Sonoma County
  • 2015 Zinfandel, Black Chicken, Napa Valley
  • 2015 Zinfandel, Grande Vineyard, Napa Valley
  • 2015 Zinfandel, Monte Rosso Vineyard, Moon Mountain District, Sonoma County
  • 2015 Zinfandel, Rockpile Vineyard, Sonoma County
  • 2015 Zinfandel, R.W. Moore Vineyard, Coombsville, Napa Valley
  • 2015 Zinfandel, Stagecoach Vineyard, Napa Valley
  • 2011 Zinfandel, Old Crane Ranch, St. Helena, Napa Valley
  • 2015 Petite Sirah, Royal Punishers, Rutherford, Napa Valley
  • 2012 Petite Sirah, E.B.A. (Extended Barrel Aged), Napa Valley
  • 2013 Basic Black, Proprietary Red Wine, Sonoma County
  • 2013 Like Father Like Son, Proprietary Red Wine, Napa Valley

The Winery started as a family farm in 1937. They produced Zinfandel grapes, mostly for sale but the teenage Aldo Biale held a bit back for experimental winemaking. He did a great job and shared it with a few friends and customers who bought other products from the farm. It was good stuff so word spread in Napa. But this was a small time operation, so to keep the bootlegging under wraps from those eavesdropping on the party line phone the Biales used (millennials may have to google this), those in the know got their jug of Zin by asking for a “black chicken.”  Today, “black chicken” is a wine, a wine club, and an important part of the heritage of Robert Biale.

From 1937 through 1991 the Biales only sold wine to family friends. Finally, in 1991 Aldo, his son Robert and two other partners bonded the Winery and started selling wine to the public. Since then, they’ve become a bit of a cult Zinfandel producer. In a valley dominated by Cabernet (only 3% is planted to Zin), Biale stays true to the heritage of Napa, which is thought to have produced some of the first Zin in the US. One important caveat: This is a small production winery and they sell out of stuff quickly (they produce about 20 different Zinfandels and 10,000 cases of wine per year — pretty small for Napa!). The wine is distributed in some places around the US, but if you see it, you better get it while you can – like tonight.

No single pundit rated all of these bottles. There is reasonably unanimous agreement that virtually all of these wines range from 90+ to 94 points. That is amazing consistency from the ratings gurus that can rarely agree on whether they are tasting the same wine. Napa Valley has seen cult wines emerge and disappear over the decades – some completely, some just fading away. What is different here, is that the varietal is not Cabernet Sauvignon – it’s Zinfandel, with an assist by Petite Sirah. And, it has been extremely popular for a couple of decades and continues strong. If you like Zinfandel and Petite Sirah (and that’s all of you, right?), this is the lot for you! Don’t let someone steal it from you. Be aggressive; go for it!

Two engraved double-magnums [3L] of Arietta 2015 Napa Valley wines: H Block Hudson Vineyards, Red Blend; and Cabernet Sauvignon, Napa Valley.

Named for the Arietta movement of Beethoven’s last piano sonata Opus 111, Arietta was founded in 1996 by Fritz and Caren Hatton with John and Maggy Kongsgaard over their love for classical music and wine. Arietta’s artful and complex wines are made by renowned winemaker Andy Erickson, formerly of Harlan Estate, Screaming Eagle, and Jonata.

Under Andy’s direction, Arietta’s wines have truly lived up to their namesake’s reputation.  The H Block Hudson Vineyards, where the Cabernet Franc that originally inspired Arietta’s formation grows, produces particularly superb wines. The 2015, a blend of 75% Cabernet France and 25% Merlot, is an elegant expression of the very best that Cabernet Franc has to offer.  According to Andy Erickson, “the wine offers all that is special about Cabernet Franc grown in the perfect setting—black-purple color, a broad-shouldered stature, and a plush, velvety texture, along with notes of black currant, raspberry, blueberry, clove, and dried flowers. On the palate, more layers are revealed, including hints of fresh blueberry… and dried sage.”  This wine will age for at least the next 20 years. The 2015 Cabernet Sauvignon, rated 94 by Wine Advocate, is an equally deft creation featuring 100% Cabernet Sauvignon. Its black cherries and plum pair flawlessly with its decadent but soft mouthfeel and satisfying finish. This is another wine that will age gracefully for the next 20 years and more.

Many patrons of LDV have experienced Andy Erickson’s wines from one of his many stops in California. Do not miss out on delighting in two of his most recent successes at Arietta.

While there he was named a Grand Chef by Relais and Chateaux, and he received the James Beard award for Best Chef Southeast in 2013, the first chef in Tennessee to win this prestigious award. After a decade at Blackberry Farm, Joseph decided in April 2015 to undertake the challenge of opening his own restaurant, which came to be J.C. Holdway. The restaurant was singled out by Garden and Gun as one of the five best new restaurants in the South in 2016.

This amazing lot also includes an unforgettable selection from the cellar of Charleston wine importer Frederick Corriher, who has generously offered to be on hand to share his profound and specialized knowledge of his authentic, grower-made French wines. Hard to imagine a more divine food and wine combination than Chef Lenn’s locally-sourced cuisine prepared in wood-fired ovens and Mr. Corriher’s rare and distinctive Frech imports. A mutually-agreeable date to be decided with Chef Lenn, Mr. Corriher, at the winning bidder.  Salut!

Overnight stay for two at Amizetta Estate & Vineyard Family Hunting Cabin on Howell Mountain, Napa Valley; includes three bottles [750mL] 2015 reds in wooden box, one each: Complexity Bordeaux-blend; Estate Cabernet Sauvignon; Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon; PLUS, private tour and tasting.

Stay overnight on the beautiful Amizetta Estate and Vineyard property in Napa Valley. Nestled over scenic views of the Conn Valley in Napa at the base of Howell Mountain, Amizetta’s elevation reaches over 1,000 feet and the vineyard has panoramic views of Lake Hennessey, Pritchet Hill, and the San Pablo Bay. To say the property is gorgeous is an understatement!

Stay in the Amizetta family hunting cabin located on the estate. First converted from a stable to cabin by former president of Paramount pictures, the building dates back to the early 1990. When Amizetta owners, the Clark Family, acquired the property in 1980 they remodeled to a small cottage. It has one bedroom and bath with claw-foot tub, open plan living area, fully equipped kitchen, and spacious outdoor entertaining area.

Amizetta Winery was built in 1984 after Spencer and Amizetta finished planting their terraced hillside vineyards. They wanted to create a small facility that matched the average annual yields of their land’s harvest. They enlisted the services of Justin Meyer (the founder and winemaker of Silver Oak Cellars) to help design their dream winery. Together the three created a design they dubbed ‘a winemaker’s winery.’

The winery’s unique location next to the Los Pasados State Forest and its’ all-natural mineral water creates rich, complex flavors in the grapes. Experience for yourself these flavors as you privately sample the exceptional wines produced by the distinctive combination of Amizetta’s soil, water, and elevation.

While at the estate the winning bidder will get a tour and tasting but you don’t have to wait until then to try Amizetta’s wines! Take home three bottles of their 2015 Cabernet Sauvignon: Complexity, a traditional Bordeaux-style blend; Estate, and Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon. So much fun to taste side-by-side, don’t miss out on this opportunity to experience Amizetta’s beautiful wine and hospitality – bid!

SIGN UP – A Five-Session Series of Pop-Up Wine Dinners for 20 Persons at Bistro by the Tracks and Four Other Restaurants from the Burleson Family of Restaurants. To be on Consecutive Sunday Afternoons at 5:30 pm. Starting April 8, 2018; Ending May 6, 2018. $500 Per Person.

The concept for this year will be a departure from the past in a couple of ways. First, we will be using the popular “Pop-Up Dinner” concept. We would have the class in a different one of the Burleson Family of Restaurant locations each week. The five weeks would include, in no specific order, Sunspot, Crown and Goose, Barley’s Tavern, Aubrey’s, and of course Bistro by the Tracks. Glenn Irwin will work with Randy’s executive chef – Jeff Carter – to define each week’s meal. Meals will not be taken from the specific menus, but rather based on the talents of the chefs at each location. This will allow them to step out of their normal routine and show us their best work. The wine theme will also vary each week. Themes will include a high-rated wine night where the wines are comprised of wines rated at least 95 points; and, a “were they tasting the same wine?” night where the scores for the wines awarded by Wine Spectator and Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate differ by at least 5 points. Glenn will lead a group discussion of each of the wines. The group will be asked to figure out what the theme of the week has been at the end of the evening. Dates for the class will be:  April 8, April 15, April 22, April 29, and May 6. Classes will begin at 5:30. Cost has been pegged to the cost of a L’Amour du Vin ticket for quite some time. So, this year the cost is $500 per person. Given the excellent cuisine and the wine that will be served, that price for 5 wine dinners is a bargain. The past Surveys were a lot of fun – much more of a party than a survey course. You don’t want to miss out this year.
